Ferndale is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. It lies on the west side of the Cascade Mountains and is bordered by the towns of West Jordan and Auburn to the south, Lacey to the east, and Seattle to the north. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in Ferndale were Norwegian men who arrived in 1851. They built a log cabin on what is now First Street. A post office was established in 1855, and mail went through West Jordan until 1906 when it was moved to Ferndale. In 1865, ferneryard pioneer Wm. Henson erected a sawmill on what is now Banks Road which became an important commercial center for ferneryards throughout Puget Sound region. The first store opened in 1870 on Main Street. By 1880 there were twenty-one stores in Ferndale with a payroll of $5,000 per year. In 1886, Jno Moberg acquired land near present day First Avenue and Second Street for agricultural use; this location would become one of Ferndale's most significant recreation areas including golf courses (present day South Park Golf Course) and state parks (present day Mount Elliott State Park). Moberg's company developed ferneryard products such as lumber and flour that helped support local businesses during hard times during the early 20th century. Today many buildings from this time period still stand within Ferndale including Jno Moberg's mill building which houses both its original glass facade and a replica of its original bellows engine room; also located within are several other associated buildings from that era such as Mr. Moberg's grocery store (now known as Old Navy), his home at 301 E 2ND St., Mrs./Mr./Mrs.'s restaurant/laboratories at 519 N 1ST Ave., Kelsey's department store at 411 S 4TH St., Wm./Wanda Sheppard's house/apartment complex at 105 S 33RD Ave., etc.). During World War II local farmers produced food items like cereal for soldiers stationed overseas while manufacturing munitions such as planes and tanks; many residents also worked either directly or indirectly related to war production including engineers working on radar stations or assemblers making ammo boxes out of aluminum cans filled with lead projectiles

Ferndale is located on the eastern shore of Lake Union and extends for about 8 miles (13 km). It is bordered by the city of Seattle to the north and east, Auburn to the south and west, and Renton to the northwest. The first permanent settler in what would become Ferndale was James K. Polk in 1853. The town was platted as a village on December 15, 1856 by commissioners from Tacoma. A post office called Ferndale was established in 1857; it remained in operation until 1959. In 1861, ferrous ore was discovered near present-day Ferndale and this led to increased development around that time; mills were built at various points along US 101A until 1933 when all production ceased due to World War II shortages of metal materials. In 1951–1952, ferric oxide production recommenced after being halted during World War II; this led to an increase in population growth within town limits as people began working in nearby industries such as aluminum smelters and shipyards In 1980s/1990s there was a large housing project going on which had negative effects on local businesses who lost customers due to noise troubles etc
