Ferndale, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,382 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by James Henson and Alfred Potter as a small community on the east side of Lake Washington. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and entered into a trade agreement with Boeing Aircraft Co., which built two airfields here: Camp Evans and Northgate Aerodrome. In 1939, Ferndale annexed what had been Lower Queen Anne to its boundaries; this made it one of the few towns in King County that did not experience annexation after becoming an incorporated municipality. In 1951, Ferndale established its own fire department and police department. At that time it also became home to the first high school for students from rural areas in King County. In 1957, voters authorized construction of a new elementary school—the first public education institution in Ferndale—on land donated by businessman George Fenton.
