The history of the United States Army gift shop began in Ferndale, Washington in 1917. At that time, there was no military department within the Department of Defense and the only way to purchase items for the troops was through Second World War veteran stores. One such store was The Gift Shop at 4th Avenue and Union Street. Colonel John W. Weems, Jr., owner of the store, started selling items for the American forces in Europe during World War I. He donated his profits from sales to the war effort. In 1941, Colonel Weems' son John W. Weems III took over ownership of The Gift Shop and continued to sell items for troops stationed in America and abroad until his death in 2005. In its long history, The Gift Shop has sold a wide variety of military-related items including uniforms, insignia, equipment, cigars, cigarettes and other tobacco products. It is also one of few businesses in Ferndale that still sells AmeriCorps gifts - which are allocated to local veterans organizations - along with numerous other Military-themed gifts such as medals and trophies. Today's version of The Gift Shop is located on 10th Avenue between Union Street and Seattle Drive near Tacoma University Park (pictured below). In addition to selling military-related items online as well as through brick-and-mortar locations across America (including Fort Lewis Military Base), they offer a wide range of gift options for any occasion - from birthdays to weddings or graduations - making it an ideal place to buy unique gifts for family or friends alike!

In 1855, during the Oregon War, General George Custer was killed in action near Pendleton, Oregon. His unit, the 7th Cavalry Regiment, was stationed in Ferndale at Fort Hall when they heard of his death. The soldiers from this regiment donated money to build a monument in his memory and this is how Fort Hall got its name - "Custer Heights". In 1951, ferndale became an important military base as it served as home to two Air Force wings and a Marine squadron stationed there. During the Vietnam War, Ferndale played an important role as a supply stop for American forces fighting in South Vietnam. Today, Ferndale is known for its art scene and its vibrant cultural heritage which includes traditional Native American ceremonies and performances as well as contemporary music and theatre events.
Ferndale is a town in Cowlitz County, Washington, United States. The population was 925 at the 2010 census. Ferndale is one of the oldest towns in Washington and is home to the only remaining windmill in the state. The mill was built by Captain John Ledyard in 1847 and still works today. Ferndale was founded on February 15, 1800 by fur traders George Vancouver and David Thompson. It was named after Sir Humphrey Gilbert Ferndale, 1st Baronet who had been governor of Bengal from 1793 to 1800. As early as 1814, ferndale post office spelled "Ferndale" until it was changed to its present spelling in 1845 by commissioners under US Mail Order Act No. 7 of that year. In 1862, ironworks were established here and remained operational until 1916 when they were closed due to World War I shortages of steel materials. In 1902, Ferndale became part of what is now Cowlitz County; within it it continued to be named for its original location but also took on additional names (eastern Ferry Landing/Niles Ferry Landing; South Ferry Landing/Central Ferry Landing; North Ferry Landing). On July 1, 1907, all local governments within Cowlitz County were consolidated into what is now county government with a single name: King County. This consolidation created numerous problems for residents as there were now more than one name for everything - often confusing newcomers or those already living hereabouts who didn't know which municipality or division their street ran through - so on September 3rd 1907 a new post office called Ferndale opened with mailing privileges only within King County The first settler in Ferndale was Capt John Ledyard who arrived with his family from England in 1847 however they did not settle permanently until 1850 when they erected a log cabin near the site where their later fortification would stand Ledyard operated an early ferry service across Elliott Bay between Seattle and Olympia before developing this land into a town that would soon become one of America's most important commercial centres

However, during World War I Ferndale largely eschewed involvement in the war effort due to its neutrality policy. In 1943, the city was named one of America's " boomtowns." Ferndale is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County. The name Ferndale may come from fernery meaning "farmstead" or "place of gathering". The first permanent settler in what is now Ferndale was George Stephenson in 1851. He and his brother built a log cabin on the site of what is now the first post office. In 1854, two brothers named John and Peter Hoadly started a farm west of town, which became known as Cottage Grove. In 1865, Samuel Morse moved to Ferndale from Bellingham and began construction on the Seattle-Ferndale Railway. After several years of construction, it reached Ferndale in 1868; this made Ferndale the first incorporated city in King County. In 1898, when ferries were introduced to Lake Washington by Captain Charles Wilbur Smith and others for transportation between Seattle and Olympia, Captain Smith donated land off Capitol Hill for a ferry landing at present-day Swiftwater Beach near where he lived with his second wife Anna Maria (née Corson). This landing became known as Harbor Park after him. In 1903–1904 an act by Congress authorized establishment of schools within each Congressional District; this created District 9 which included all but part of today's Ferndale Township including present-day Swartz Creek Village and parts of West Thurston Village east of Interstate 5th Avenue . As part as part of this Act there also were given Lots 8 & 10 adjoining Soo River about one mile north East from Ferry Landing extending into said Village lying Northeast along Soo River shore line until its mouth empties into Puget Sound From 1888 until 1916 there existed only one store in our village called Mrs Sprague's Store located on lot number 4 opposite Ferry Landing thenceforth through annexation by Swartz Creek Village it being renamed Mrs Sprague's Store again
