The history of coffee lovers in Federal Way, Washington goes back to at least the 1840s. The first documented coffee shop in Federal Way was called The Coffee House on Second Street. In 1851, a mill located near current day Tacoma started making coffee and selling it from a small store on Fourth Avenue. By 1865, the mill had grown too large to be sold by hand so it became known as The Coffee House Mill and Manufacturing Company. In 1868, the company moved to its current location on First Avenue NW. It continued manufacturing coffee until 1971 when it closed down due to financial problems.
Federal Way is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue–Fremont–Winona area. The town was founded by fur traders in 1849 as Anacortes and named after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate on the Puget Sound. In 1872, it became a city under the name Federal Way and annexed by Seattle. In 1907, it again became a city when its annexation by Seattle was approved by Congress. The current name comes from the word "federal" which refers to both its location within King County as well as its status as an unincorporated community within that county. The town has a rich history dating back to when it was first settled by fur traders in what is now Federal Way. One of those traders, Alexander McMillan, built his home near present-day Federal Way on land he acquired from Chief Sealth of the Duwamish Tribe in 1848. The village of Anacortes grew up around McMillan's home until about 1870 when most of what are now Federal Way's residents came overland from British Columbia during Puget Sound Treaty days to celebrate America's independence from Great Britain. During this time frame, many prominent people including Governor James Kenedy and Mayor Charles Goodyear lived and worked in Anacortes or nearby Olympia before moving on to more permanent homes in Federal way or elsewhere in King County during that era. By 1915 there were only six dwellings in Anacortes while over 20 years later there were 350 occupants living principally outside of town limits due primarily to World War I efforts to relocate military personnel away from cities into rural areas where they could be closer to their families and munitions plants located at various points along the coastline across Western Washington
