Federal Way is a city in Washington State, United States. The population was 41,521 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th-largest city in Washington and the second-largest city in the Puget Sound region. The area that now comprises Federal Way was first settled by farmers and their families during the late 19th century. A major transportation hub for Western Washington, it grew rapidly after World War II as Boeing developed its Seattle–Tacoma factory there. Since 2000, Federal Way has seen significant growth as a bedroom community for Seattle; it now has more people living within its borders than any other municipality in Alabama or Alaska. The City of Federal Way was established on November 5, 1907 when voters approved a charter amendment to create an urban government for what had been rural farmland east of Interstate 5. On January 6, 1909, Mayor Harry Jepsen dedicated streetscape improvements that would become home to many of today's attractions including Lake Union and Pike Place Market; these were followed by annexation of neighboring towns such as Auburn (1910), Normandy (1911), South Bend (1920), Bellevue (1922) and Everett (1927). In 1933, the city annexed land from Yakima Valley to the north (the so-called “Alaska Strip”). The early years of Federal Way's history were difficult due to problems with malaria which plagued settlers throughout most of Northwest Washington during this time period; however, over time mosquito control measures helped reduce this problem significantly. In 1945 Federal Way became one of two American cities to be saved from destruction by air raids following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor – until then all but four NWWA cities had been destroyed or severely damaged by bombing campaigns during World War II alone! In 1951 downtown business districts were drastically changed when Interstate 5 was built cutting off much needed pedestrian access into downtown Federal Way from I-405/Pike Place Market; however local businesses quickly adapted and began again growing Downtown federal way !! Federal Way is a city in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2010 census, Federal Way had a population of 95,726. The city was founded in 1851 by settlers from Puget Sound and adjacent counties as part of the territory acquired by the United States during the Mexican–American War. It became an incorporated town in 1907 and became a city on January 1, 1949.
The Federal Way area was once part of the greater Seattle metropolitan area. The city of Seattle annexed the rural areas to its west in 1889, and by 1907, most of what is now the Federal Way area had been annexed as well. In 1916, the Washington State Legislature created a new county in the western portion of Seattle County and detached what is now Federal Way from it. The land became part of Thurston County.
