Enumclaw is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Everett-Aurora, WA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1855 by John Enumclaw and his wife Catharine McNaughten. It was named for an Indian word meaning "the four directions." The first post office was established in 1857, and the first store opened in 1861. In 1865, the town became a school district. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1870, and a lumberyard opened in 1902. In 1930, Enumclaw began to grow rapidly due to its location on the railroad line between Seattle and Everett. More than 1,000 people moved into the town during that decade. By 1941, it had reached its peak population of 2,500 people; however, World War II led to a decline in enrollment over ensuing years until it fell to 1,500 in 2000. The current incarnation of Enumclaw began as an agricultural village located east of the tracks near what is now Interstate 525 (King County Line Road).
