The Ellensburg Guard was created to protect the community and keep citizens safe during the American Civil War. The first unit to be organized were two companies of militia from the town of Ellensburg. In 1865, a third battalion was formed and served until 1869. In 1892, a new regiment was raised and attached to the District of Columbia National Guard. The regiment served until 1903 when it was merged into the Ellensburg National Guardsmen Regiment. In 1911, a fourth battalion was raised and served until 1916 when it decommissioned due to World War I efforts. A fifth battalion was raised in 1919 but did not serve due to World War II efforts. The present day national guard gift history in Ellensburg begins with reactivation of the present regiment on October 1, 2007 by then-Governor Christine Gregoire as part of her celebration for 100 years of national defense in Washington state. The new regiment is commanded by Colonel Tim Welsh and has an enlisted force numbering over 2,000 men including 400 women soldiers who are members-at-large or reserve duty troops who are mobilized for special operations duty within their county or district military commands). The Washington National Guard was organized on July 12, 1861. The first military unit in Ellensburg was the 2nd Regiment of Infantry, which was raised on October 15, 1861. The regiment was mustered into service on November 2, 1861 and served until December 8, 1862. It then went on to serve in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1864 it rejoined the army and fought at Pea Ridge in Arkansas and Manassas Junction in Virginia. In 1865 it withdrew from the Union army and returned to Washington state. On February 1, 1866 this regiment was redesignated as 3rd Regiment of Infantry and served until June 30, 1870. It then re-organized as 1st Regiment of Cavalry under command of Major General John A. Macdonald and served until January 6, 1871 when it disbanded.
Ellensburg is a small town in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,439 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Yakima Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area.The town was founded in 1881 by John A. Hill and named for him, Alexander Hamilton Ellensburg. The first post office in town was established on December 6, 1881. In 1886, the Federal government bought land west of town and built Fort Ellensburg to protect it from Indian attacks. In 1907 the U.S Army moved Fort Ellensburg to its current location east of town and renamed it Fort Lewis after General George Armstrong Custer who died there in 1892. Fort Lewis served as a military base until 1959 when it was closed due to budget cuts and its replacement by Joint Base Lewis-McChord which retains most of its historical features including its barracks and parade ground.. However, over time many portions of Fort Lewis have been preserved or converted into residential units with commercial areas surrounding them which makes for an interesting mix that can be visited during day or night visits depending on what timeof year you are visiting.. In 1924 the Kittitas Valley Chamber of Commerce started issuing buttons called "Ella's Place". These were designed by local artist Anna Hebardt and were meant to promote tourism in the valley; specifically withinEllenburghurchamber's boundaries. They continued production until around 1990 when they stopped being made entirely due to lack of demand but continue to be sold online as souvenirs or as part of field trips.. Today there are only a few remaining examples left worldwide including one in Silverdale, Washington

In the early 1800s, Ellensburg was a bustling small town of about 60 residents. The town was founded in 1824 by John and Martha Washington, who were pioneer farmers and merchants. It quickly grew into a thriving community with a vibrant cultural life. The town's history starts with its founding as an Indian trading post on the Lewis River. In 1824, settlers from British Columbia arrived in search of gold and found an abandoned Indian trading post on the Lewis River. After exploring the area for several weeks, they decided to move their settlement to what is now Ellensburg because of its potential for agriculture and trade with China. The first permanent settler in Ellensburg was John Auld, who arrived in 1828. He built the first house in what is now the downtown area of Ellensburg and opened a general store there. By 1830, many other settlers had moved into the town, including James Auld Jr., who became one of the co-owners of Auld & Sons grocery store. The growth of Ellensburg led to it becoming an incorporated village in 1835. During World War II, much activity took place at nearby Seattle Navy Yard due to military needs during wartime production fueled by aluminum production at Castle Rock Arsenal northwest of Seattle
The community of Ellensburg was founded in 1864 by the railroad company, The Seattle and Tacoma Railroad. There were only a few hundred people living in the town when it was established. The first store in town was built on East Main Street. By 1870, there were several businesses in the town and a school was built. In 1881, the population of Ellensburg had grown to over 1,000 people and a post office was established. A hospital was also built in the town and it became known as the "hospital of choice" for residents of Ellensburg. In 1935, The Seattle-Tacoma Railway merged with The Pacific Northwest Railway to form The Seattle-Tacoma Railroad Company. This company discontinued service to Ellensburg in 1948.
