Edmonds is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. In 1879, when Edmonds was incorporated as a village, it had a population of only 36 people. The first settler in what would become Edmonds was John Fenton and his family who came from England in 1848. They started a farm that became the nucleus of the community. The growth of Edmonds began with incorporation as a village on February 17, 1886 by vote of the citizens of the town - one year after it was founded on land that had been donated by Major General George Custer to be used for school purposes. On December 12th 1886, voters approved annexing Unalaska Island which lies east of present-day Edmonds and forms part of today's unincorporated portion of King County. In 1902–1903, Edmonds built its first public elementary school on Main Street (now First Avenue NE). That building still stands and is currently being used as an administrative office for local schools. A new elementary school was built in 1912 on Northeast Seventh Avenue NE and opened for instruction on October 15th 1912; it also remains standing and is presently used ashousing for students at nearby Northview Elementary School. In 1922 President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Edmonds while campaigning for reelection; he made speeches at Unalaska Junior High School (now Southridge Middle School) and then delivered an address to the people of Edmondsville before leaving for Everett Naval Air Station where he flew his experimental plane called "The Beast". A new high school was built adjacent to Southeast Sixth Avenue NE between 1941-1945 while Northwest High School served as its predecessor until 1959 when it closed due to overcrowding caused by World War II mobilization efforts in both King County and neighboringSeattle . A new high school replaced Northwest High School which reopened on August 6th 1959 with 459 students following completionof construction costs associated with creatinga second campus within walking distance fromthe oldhighschool site . That new campus servedEdmondsville until 1993 when annexation intoKingCounty promptedthe closureofthatcampus too .Today edmons has two postsecondary education opportunities: Eastern Washington Universityand Western Washington University .
