Edmonds is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1887 by J.H. Edmonds and named for him because he purchased all the land within its boundaries from John Bennett, an American Indian leader who had been killed several years earlier. The first coffee beans were grown on property in Edmonds during the early 1800s by Spanish missionaries as part of their missionary efforts to plant coffee seeds among the Native Americans living in what is now King County. By 1885, J.H. Edmonds had acquired enough land within his boundaries to support a small coffee plantation and began to sell coffee beans direct to local consumers through his store and house until 1886 when he moved his business into larger facilities on First Avenue SE near present day Capitol Hill before eventually moving both businesses across South Lake Union Street into their current locations in 1907. In 1916, two brothers started a grocery store next door to where Interstate 5 meets I-5 south of downtown Olympia (now known as CenturyLink Field). They continued operation as Northwest Grocery until 1949 when they merged with Safeway Incorporated to become Safeway/WineAmerica which continues operations today as one of America's largest food retailers with over $100 billion in annual sales
Edmonds, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 2,574 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in King County and it is also the smallest of the five townships that make up the county. The name "Edmonds" comes from Edwin Augustus Edmondson, who settled there in 1847. The first post office was established in 1851. The first store was built on what is now Depot Street in 1865. As more people came to Edmonds, they started creating their own businesses and village began to form around schools and churches; by 1870 there were 10 homes and 50 businesses. In 1907, an express railroad station was built on what is now Hill Road near Interstate 5/Washington State Route 98B; this allowed easier access for farmers coming into town from the farms surrounding it. In 1969, local voters approved a plan to merge with neighboring Lynnwood as part of a larger redevelopment effort called "Laughing Cow". At its peak during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Edmonds had over 100 businesses and 1,000 residents; however over time business have begun to decline as technology has taken hold and commuting has become more convenient or affordable outside of town. Today there are only about 60 residents living within walking distance of all of their shops and services including two schools (one public school), one library, three restaurants/cafés, two churches (the First Congregationalist Church being founded in 1892), one doctor's office (with 24 hours notice) and one ambulance service (which provides emergency medical services). A fire destroyed most of the downtown district in 2006 but since then much redevelopment has taken place which includes new shopping centers including JCPenney Place mall with anchor stores Macy's(2006), Sears(2007), Uniqlo(2009-present) as well as several other large retailers such as Home Goods(2005), Lowe's(2008-present) along with several smaller stores like JoAnn Fabric Store(2005)]. There are also plans for a movie theater complex that would include multiplexes AMC Theatres[2010] along with several smaller theaters like Regal Cinemas[2011], Diamond Cinemas[2012] - all located very close to each other making it easy to get around without leaving your neighborhood!
