It lies east of the city of Wenatchee on the north side of the Wenatchee River. The community was named after East Wenatchee Creek which flows through it. East Wenatchee had a post office from 1911 to 1959. The town was incorporated in 1958. It had a population of 596 as of the 2000 census. As of 2009, it had shrunk to just 106 residents and no businesses remained open since 2010 due to gentrification in Wenatchee and elsewhere in Douglas County

The first permanent settlers in East Wenatchee were two families from Yakima Valley who arrived in 1854 and started building log cabins on what is now the east side of Main Street. In 1865, German immigrants founded a farmstead near present day Watertown and began to plant hay and apples there. The first post office for East Wenatchee was established in 1870. One hundred years later, on July 8th, 2013, East Wenatchee had its centennial celebration with an event including a parade and picnic on Main Street. In 1916-1917, during World War I (), Centralia National Laboratory operated out of East Wenatchee's First Presbyterian Church until it moved to Olympia; thisLabs helped developed many new drugs such as penicillin (). After World War II (), large amounts of military hardware were shipped through the area by railroads; this led to enlargement of East Wenatchee's economy which has lead to several downtown businesses being built over time: Eastern Market (1973), Northeast Hardware (1976), Wanamaker's Department Store (1984), Kincaids Restaurant & Lounge(1998) and A&W Food Systems (2007). A new elementary school opened in 2003-2004 in what used to be an old lumber store next door to Kincaids restaurant called "Nelson School". In 2006-2007 construction started on a new high school across from Eastern Market called "Hilton School" after then Mayor Rich Higgins Sr.'s campaign slogan "Eastson needs schools!" The facility was completed in 2009-2010 and became known as "East High".

The town of Wenatchee, Washington was founded in 1855 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including water and coal. In 1888, Wenatchee became the first incorporated municipality in Washington. The town experienced a rapid growth until World War II when it suffered from economic decline. After the war, Wenatchee growth resumed as it became an important center for agriculture. In 1984, the city of Wenatchee merged with surrounding rural towns to form the current jurisdiction of East Wenatchee.
