The Marine Corps has been deploying giftNEWS to East Wenatchee, Washington for as long as the Marines have been a part of the community. The tradition started in 1944 when Marines stationed in Seattle brought a smallpox vaccine and other supplies to local farmers who were struggling during World War II. The gifts continue today, with Marines bringing donations of food, clothing, and other items to help people in need. This year marks the 93rd anniversary of the first deployment of Marine Corps GiftNEWS teams to East Wenatchee. In 1944, members of Company K1st Battalion 2nd Marines landed at Lopez Island and began distributing food and supplies to locals in need. From there, the tradition spread through various detachments until it reached its current form in 1946 when Company C from Camp Pendleton donated clothes and toys for children living near Tacoma. There are currently 4 companies that deployments GiftNEWS teams each month to East Wenatchee: 1st Battalion 9th Marines (Blue Angels), 3rd Battalion 5th Marines (Marine Toys for All), 2nd Lieutenant Colonel Kevin J. Smith’s ceremonial detachment (Marines Charitable Giving Unit), and 1st Lieutenant Colonel John Sievers’ administrative detachment (Providence Supplies). Each detachment providesitems such as food, clothing, toys, games/activity packs, backpacks/wristbands/other gear for kids living within their unit’s vicinity or beyond. Each company also sends a representative from their unit on Deployment Gifts Nights which culminates with an auctionFundraising event that benefits local charities. These events provide opportunities for residents ofEast Wenatcheeto meet their fellow Marines and learn about how they support our Armed Forces by donating goods and services tothe community

The Marines have always been known for their service to country, their bravery, and their dedication to duty. In recent decades, the Marines have become known as one of America’s favorite military forces. The Marine Corps is composed of three primary branches: the Infantry Regiment (First Battalion/Fourth Marines), artillery battalion (Third Battalion/ Sixth Marines), Special Forces squadron (Seventh Fleet Squadron/ Seventh Air Force) and air wing (Third Marine Aircraft Wing). Each branch has its own unique history that can be traced back to its inception within the Marine Corps. The Infantry Regiment is responsible for infantry attack operations while artillery battalion provides support for ground troops during combat missions; Third Battalion conducts amphibious landings while Sixthmarine Air Wing provides air cover; Seventh Fleet Squadron operates Navy ships while Eighth Naval District supports shore commands ashore; and Ninth Naval District provides logistical support to other naval command posts ashore. In 1898, when American Samoa became a territory of the United States following World War I, Marines from Company D from San Diego were called into service as part of Project Mule which was designed to establish American control over the island after Japan had taken it from us in the war. After spending two years training on Samoan soil, Company D was ordered northward to Tarawa where they took part in Operations Neptune’s Spear and Endeavor in November 1918 under General Douglas MacArthur who later credited them with “inflamed[ing] popular sentiment against Japan throughout much of America”. After serving as marines at Guadalcanal during WWII they were recalled home where they helped liberate New York City from Japanese occupation on December 14th 1941 before deploying again 3 months later to assist in Operation Neptune’s Spear which led up to Pearl Harbor . On December 7th 1942 they landed at Saipan where they participation in fighting until January 8th 1943 when order came through not To Deploy due To Bombardment Of Honolulu By Japanese Carriers But Withdrawal From That Location In Order To Support Allies At Kwajalein Atoll As They Entered The Battle Of Midway And Other Battles Leading Up To Okinawa This Year They Returns Home June 1944 After Over A Month Of Expeditionary Activity In THE SOUTH PACIFIC After arriving back home some went onto serve with distinction such as future Commandant general James Fenton who received his commission as a lieutenant colonel then Major General LewieKendall who served 2 terms as Commandant General before being promoted Lieutenant Colonel Then Colonel General George Smedley When He Was Directed To Take Over As Commander In Chief Pacific Theater September 1945

East Wenatchee, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley ofWA. The town was founded in 1883 by John Augustus Sibley and his family. The first post office was established in East Wenatchee on October 7, 1883. The name of the town has been changed several times over its history, but it has always been known as East Wenatchee. The first settlers to live in the area were farmers who came to the area from eastern Washington during the late 1800s. In 1903, East Wenatchee had a population of just over 100 people and was located near what is now Yakima County. In 1916, an addition to Yakima County was created and East Wenatchee became part of that county. However, by 1924, there were only a few residents remaining in the town and it amalgamated with neighboring Evergreen City to form one large community. During World War II, many citizens served in the military and many businesses were destroyed or damaged during hostilities. During this time period, East Wenatchee also increased its population significantly due to burgeoning post-war prosperity. However, by 1964 there were just a handful of residents living in the town again and it merged once again with Evergreen City for another period of growth until declining popularity led to its dissolution in 1996. Today, little remains except for some abandoned buildings left behind from when East Wenatchee functioned as one large community
