East Wenatchee, Washington is a town located in the central part of the state of Washington. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Kittitas County and home to the East Wenatchee Lighthouse. The land that now makes up East Wenatchee was first inhabited by Native Americans. The area around present-day East Wenatchee was explored by traders and settlers in 1847. In 1868, east of present-day East Wenatchee, a group of men led by Captain John P. Stevens discovered gold near what is now known as Griggs Gulch. Because gold could not be extracted from the ground, colonists began to mine coal from nearby hills in an effort to find money to buy goods they needed for their new settlement. In 1906, WWI interrupted these mining efforts and destroyed many mines along with several thousand acres of forest. Although some people returned to mining after the war, most residents left when transportation became available only through sea or air cargo instead of overland journeys. This change coincidentally also happened during a time when Spokane County grew rapidly due to its annexation into Puget Sound Territory following WWI; this made it easier for businesses in eastern King County to do business without having to deal with Redmond or Tacoma proper (although those areas had continue growth). nevertheless little development took place until World War II when people started moving back into East Wenatchee because of wartime jobs and opportunities as agriculture boomed due to advances in technology such as canning techniques and refrigeration. After WWII ended there was significant growth again thanks largely to immigrants who came looking for work throughout various parts of North America; some settling permanently while others remained transient for years before returning home eventually forming more permanent communities around their original homes (the so-called “newcomers” are sometimes considered predecessors or ancestors of today’s residents). In the early 1800s, East Wenatchee was a small farming village located on the banks of the Columbia River. The community had only a few homes and businesses, but it was important for its location: It was near the river's mouth, which made it an ideal spot for fishing and shipping. The first people to settle in East Wenatchee were Native Americans. They began living in the area around 600 BC, when they started traveling down the Columbia River to trade with other tribes. Over time, they developed their own culture and language. By 1851, East Wenatchee had grown to about 100 people. At that point, it became part of what is now Douglas County. In 1862,Douglas County was formed from part of Territorial Washington Territory. Some of the early settlers in East Wenatchee were John Armstrong and his family; James Wolkentin; Jens Christensen; David Bache; and Rasmus Nielsen. In 1865, Danish immigrant Ole Olsen arrived in East Wenatchee and started a grocery store. He soon became known as "the father ofEast Wenatchee." In 1879–1880, four brothers named George built a cabin on east endof town along National Road #1 (now US-5). They called their settlement "George's Camp". The camp quickly grew into a regional center for logging and hunting operations due to its excellent access to timber resources throughout much of eastern Washington County at that time. As business opportunities grew more available in Seattle during this period (particularly following World War II), more people chose to move away from rural life in Eastern Washington County towards larger metropolitan areas such as Seattle or Tacoma
