East Wenatchee is a small town in Douglas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-425 Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in East Wenatchee were those who came from Holland in 1859 to found the town of East Wenatchee on what is now the east side of State Route 9. At that time, there were only a few families living here and most people worked around the farms in centralDouglas County. In 1886, when Eastern Wenatchee became a city, it had a population of just over 100 people and consisted mostly of artisans and farmers who made their livelihoods from agriculture or ranching. During World War II, East Wenatchee played an important role as an air- raid shelter for Douglas County residents; during that time it was home to both Hanford Arsenal and plutonium production plants operated by Union Carbide Corporation (UCC). In 1951, when Douglas County merged with King COUNTY to form King county), East Wenatchee remained an unincorporated community within that new county until 1959 when it became part of the newly created Douglas County. Today, East Wenatchee remains an agricultural community with a strong local economy based on dairy operations and logging. Today's downtown area contains several banks and various businesses including two grocery stores (Grocery Outlet & Fresh Market) as well as four restaurants:Chinese Express Buffet & Chinese Garden (closed Fall 2017), Pizzeria Bianco (closed Mar 2019), Grille du Pont & Greek Taverna ( closed Dec 2018). East Wenatchee, Washington is a small town located in Douglas County, Washington. The population was 4,048 at the 2010 census. East Wenatchee is one of the oldest towns in Douglas County and was established on July 1, 1851. It was named after the east side of Wenatchee River. The first settlers in what is now East Wenatchee were farmers who arrived in 1852 from Illinois. They began to raise crops and built log homes near the river until about 1865 when they abandoned their land for good because of difficulties with malaria and other diseases. In 1871, John Dickson founded the city of East Wenatchee on the site of his previous farmstead on what is now First Street. He started a sawmill and lumberyard here and also opened a store which became known as The Dickson Store. This business boomed during the early years of this new community development but by 1886 it had closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger local businesses. By 1893, however,East Wenatchee had recovered sufficiently to reopen its store as TheDicksonStore2and began to prosper again due to increased trade with Anacortes and Seattle via railroad service. By 1902 it had become an important commercial center for Douglas County with several businesses including a flour mill, grocery store, post office, hotel and bank all open along North Main Street which served as an axis around which local traders conducted their activities. At this time there were also educational opportunities available through private schools that operated out of TheDicksonStore2 includingDouglas High School (opened in 1903), Central School District No 10 (1899) and Eastern Technical Institute (1903). During World War I TheDicksonStore2became prominent among local businesses providing goods like canned goods, gasolineoline oil etc., necessary for war production both locally AND outside of Douglas County Ltd.. In 1919 it becameOneida Brewery Incorporated before finally closing down in 1984 following complaints from nearby residents over noise levels generated by brewing operations
