The first permanent European settlement in Des Moines was made on July 3, 1833 when German immigrants, led by J.C. Hühn, erected a log cabin on the site of present-day Iowa State Fairgrounds. In 1839, Des Moines became the county seat of Polk County after it was created from parts of Jackson and Dodge counties. During the Mexican–American War (1846–48), Des Moines served as an important military base because it was located just south of Missouri City and had access to horses and supplies needed for the war effort. After Mexico lost the war, Des Moines declined as a commercial center but continued to grow politically due to its status as a major transportation hub. In 1903, Des Moines amalgamated with neighboring city Fort Worth into one unified city called Dallas/Fort Worth which soon became one of America's leading oil capitals.
