Des Moines is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 507 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the Iowa cities and is located about 20 miles (32 km) north of Des Moines proper. The first permanent settler in what is now Des Moines was J.D. Payne in 1854. Payne's farm became one of the largest cotton plantations in Illinois and Payne named his land "Des Moines". The community grew rapidly after railroads arrived in 1868, with men coming from all over to work on these new opportunities. A school was built in 1870 and a post office was established in 1872. By 1880, Des Moines had a population of 1,500 people and it quickly gained its nickname "The City of Progress". In 1888, the city limits were expanded to include present-day west Des Moines Township on the south side of the state line as well as parts of Grimes County to the east and north. In 1896, when Iowa voters approved an amendment to its Constitution that gave city status to any town or village within its borders regardless of population size, Des Moines became an official city Limits town with a mayor and council elected by residents rather than by vote only. During World War II, many jobs were available for veterans who had served in Europe or Asia but few were available for those who had served America because there wasn't enough military industrial production then based outside North America that could provide jobs for returning servicemen. To fill this gap desegregation began immediately following World War II which also created problems for some black Americans living near white suburbs such as Cedar Rapids because they no longer could use public transportation without fear of being called names like "nigger" or "cue ball player." This issue would be addressed more fully during later decades when busing began providing similar access for everyone regardless of race or ethnicity within municipal boundaries

Des Moines is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 25,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Des Moines were French fur traders in the 17th century. In 1907,des Moines joined with other cities formed by the Minneapolis–St Paul area along with Rock Island Railroad to form what would become known as Metropolitan Kansas City (MKC). As metropolitan areas grew larger and technology advanced, DES MOINES became increasingly frustrated with its lack of access to important transportation nodes such as Interstate 44 or I-80 which cut off its economic development potential. On December 1st 2009 Mayor Donavan Smith announced that Metrorail would run through downtown DES MOINES from Union Station north to Downtown Crossing without stopping at any other stations! This project was met with mixed reactions but has since resulted in increased tourism prices for downtown businesses! Today, Des Moines is one of America’s fastest growing cities – With over 25 thousand residents already calling it home this past decade alone! Many new businesses have opened up throughout downtown des moines because Metrorail has made it easier than ever before for people to get around town!
