The City of Covington is located in the Yakima Valley, about an hour and a half away from Seattle by car. It is bordered to the south by the Puget Sound, to the east by Spokane County, and to the north by Thurston County. The population was 2,814 as of 2010. The first Europeans to visit this area were explorers trade traders who journeyed down what is now Interstate 5 in search of new markets for their goods. In 1853, George Vancouver discovered Puget Sound and named it after his home country, Scotland. The discovery of gold onshore led to a rush of settlers into this part of Washington state and Covington became one of these towns. Covington soon became a thriving community with its own school system and post office. In 1907, when Washington state changed its name to Washington Territory, Covington absorbed the town of Whitman which had also been founded that year. After World War II ended there was a growth in businesses and jobs in the agricultural sector; however during the late 1990s there was a decline in business activity due to changes in local government policies that favored more urban development over rural areas." Covington is a small town in the Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-based city of Wenatchee. The first people to live in what is now Covington were Indian traders and their descendants. John Wesley Powell passed through this area on his way to find water supplies for the Snake River Valley in 1869. In 1872, Covington became an incorporated town when it was chosen as the site for a new jail and courthouse by a vote of its citizens. The first post office opened in 1876. When silver nitrate started being mined inWA from 1898 onwards, miners known as "coveters" began streaming into WA seeking this valuable commodity which could be shipped back home on boats or hauled by handcart to Tacoma for processing. In 1901, when gold was discovered at Stevens Pass near Moses Lake,WA Coveters responded with an even greater frenzy and began moving into what is now Wenatchee looking for new veins of silver and other minerals beneath the earth's surface. By 1915 there were over 2200 men working in silver mining activities throughout western Washington including Covington where many found their fortunes through becoming partners or owners of mines along with sharecropping and farming operations lasting until well after World War II
