The Covington, Washington army deployed gift history began in 1917 when the United States military founded and operated a base at Fort Covington. The fort housed a variety of troops, including artillery and infantry. In 1951, the United States Military Academy was located at Fort Benning, Georgia. The academy hosted both the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy during its years of operation there. In 1957, Fort Hood became the first military installation in Texas to be activated as an Army post. That year also saw the activation of Fort Riley as an Army post adjacent to Wichita Falls, Texas. At that point, all Army posts in Texas were designated HeadquartersArmy Post (HQAP). HQAPS were responsible for various duties within their respective areas such as garrisoning soldiers and providing logistical support for other installations within the Department of Defense (DoD). HQAPs continued to be active until 1975 when they were replaced by HeadquartersArmy Garrison Districts (HAGDs). HAGDs are still used today but their primary purpose is now ceremonial purposes such as hosting visiting dignitaries or serving as points of contact between different DoD components or services within their area of responsibility.
