The United States Air Force operates the world's largest air force, with over 350,000 personnel. The USAF is the only service in the US military that conducts airstrikes and missile strikes abroad. The Covington Air Force Base gift history began in 1948 with the donation of a hangar and runway to the base. In 1957, the United States Air Force named a wing after Major General Curtis Eaker, Commander of Eighth Air Force during World War II. The wing was established at Covington and was activated on 1 July 1958. It became known as the 457th Bomb Wing. On 15 October 1959, the 457th Bomb Wing moved from Seymour Johnson AFB to RAF Coningsby in England as part of Operation Overlord. The wing served as an air refueling ground for Allied Bomber Command during World War II and continued this role during the Cold War era. On 1 September 1962, it was announced that Covington AFB would become home to Headquarters Third Space Command (Airborne), which would be subordinate to NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). The 3rd Space Command relocated to Vandenberg AFB, California on 16 November 1962 and assumed its current name - Headquarters USAF-Airborne Forces (-) on 30 November 1962. On 6 January 1969, it was announced that Headquarters USAF-Airborne Forces (-) had been renamed Headquarters USAF - Special Operations Command (SUOC). This change took effect on 1 February 1969 when SUOC became responsible for all military special missions within USAF jurisdiction outside conventional air forces operations areas. As Special OpsCommand HQUSAF turned over more and more functions to SUOC within its jurisdictional boundaries - including providing commando services for joint special operations actions - it rapidly evolved into what is today's Joint Chiefs of Staff's Special Operations Component Commands (SOCOM). In 1993, suoc merged with Republic Services Corporation's Military Sealift Command to form Defense Logistics Agency - Pentagon Sealed Fleet Directorate which continues under DOD Executive Order 12291 dated 10 May 1993 establishing Defence Logistics Agency - Pentagon Sealed Fleet Directorate as a separate organizational unit within DoD with responsibility for both Defense Supply Chain Management Programs (DSCMP) and materiel management programs across Naval Shipyards worldwidechurchillbrooklyn ny
Covington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. Covington is home to the Yakima Valley Museum and Veterans Memorial Park. The original land for Covington was donated by Captain Alfred Cowles in 1853. The first post office was established in 1854, and the town name was changed from Cowlesville to Covington in 1865. In 1905, the school district was created and Covington became part of it. In 1911, a dam across Clearwater River flooded most of the village and destroyed all but one house; however no injuries were reported as a result of the flooding. A new dam was built across Clearwater River in 1915 and again in 1935-36; these dams created reservoirs that provide irrigation water for many crops, including cotton, wheat, barley, potatoes and fruits trees. The town annexed neighboring communities of Leavenworth in 1922 and Wenatchee on January 1st 1924; Wenatchee became an incorporated city on December 3rd 1926. Covington has experienced some growth over time: its population reached 2,011 people by 1990 census estimates (the last official count), then increased to 2,242 by 2000 census estimates before declining slightly to 2,040 at the 2010 count. However (based on recent censuses) there may be another resident or transient population between 1,600-1,800 people who live "in place" primarily or exclusively within blocks or neighborhoods near their homes which are not counted as part of either Census tract nor individualized county populations because they have not updated their information since those censuses were taken/have not responded to requests for information about their residency status since then

The community was named after George Covington, an early settler and postmaster of the area. The first permanent habitation in what is now Covington was erected on the east bank of the Willamette River by John Day in 1846.
