The Air Force is a large and diverse organization, with forces deployed in many different parts of the world. In 1951, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Covington, Washington in commemoration of the city's role in World War II. The gift was an American bomber, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. The bomber arrived in Covington on October 25th and was dedicated on November 1st. It had been built at Boeing's Seattle factory and flew its first test flight on November 3rd. The aircraft had been constructed with donated materials from across the United States and Canada. The bombers were used for strategic bombing during World War II and their remains are still used today by the USAF as part of its Bomber Heritage Program.

Covington is a small town located in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Covington was named for John Covington, a U.S. congressman from Kentucky who served from 1853 to 1861 and again from 1865 to 1867. The town was platted in 1855, and first called "Covington Junction." The name has been changed several times since then including "Covington" (1861), "CovingtonVillage" (1864), and finally its current form of "Covington." The town's first post office opened in January 1861, and it continued to serve until May 1912. The community was built on land that had belonged to the Hiram Stevens Johnson family since before 1800. The present-day courthouse, which replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1848, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in King County. Other early landmarks include the John Aiken School House (now a museum) and the Masonic Lodge No. 2 Building (now used as a restaurant). In 1907, Covington became home to both Westinghouse Electric Company's main line telephone switching center and its Western Union branch office; this made it one of just three towns in King County with both these companies' branches located within their borders at the time. In 1961–62, when KING-TV began operations nearby at Seattle Center - transforming what had been an isolated agricultural village into one of Seattle's most vibrant communities - Coveson saw its population grow considerably as people came together to watch TV shows or shop at local stores while remaining connected through satellite phone service and other electronic technologies unavailable five years earlier.[2] Today, residents are highly involved in their local communities - serving on city councils and village governments; working as teachers, firefighters or nurses; or playing important roles in various businesses such as schools or churches.
