From 1999 until his resignation as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence in 2001, Cheney chaired the board of directors for Halliburton Inc., an energy company which had been accused by some Democrats of involvement in the Iran-Contra affair and other financial crimes. The next year he became a presidential candidate on the Reform Party ticket with Ralph Nader and lost that election too. In 2003, Cheney joined right-wing pundit Glenn Beck’s Washington team as a senior advisor on national security issues during Beck’s first run for Congress in 2006 against incumbent Democratic Representative John Conyers Jr.. After Conyers won reelection in 2006 Cheney left Beck’s team but continued working with him intermittently through 2007 when Conyers retired after 36 years in office representing Michigan's 7th District

After the war, Cheney returned to school and received his law degree from George Washington University. He began his career as an attorney in Denver, Colorado. In 1976, Cheney became Representative of Idaho's 3rd congressional district. He won reelection two years later and served until his death on October 5, 2018.
