Cheney, Washington is a small town in Cheney County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Its ZIP code is 99219. The town started as a logging village in 1867 and became a farming community in the early 20th century. Cheney's first post office opened in 1916. The town experienced growth during World War II due to the production of munitions and other electronics products. After the war, Cheney began to decline and its population reached its low point in 1960 with just over 600 residents. However, since then the town has seen growth and has regained some of its former prosperity through businesses such as plumbing and electrical services, manufacturing (particularly plastics), and agriculture. Today, Cheney is an important center for research within the Alaska Native communities that have inhabited parts of what is now Cheney County for centuries (the most recent residents are Yakama people). Cheney's rich coffee history begins with its origins as a logging village on the banks of the Snake River near present-day Anacortes. In 1867, George Hargrave established Wapato Coffee Mill hereabouts which processed logs into coffee beans for sale to local farmers nearby or to larger processors such as Seattle’s First National Bank. By 1901 Wapato had become one of America’s leading coffee roasters with exports reaching $100 per tonne sales! In 1907 or 1908 Captain JF Doherty founded Anacortes Coffee Company hereabouts which later became Unocal Corporation! One year later Unocal merged with another large producer by name of Pacific Coffee Corporation! With this merger came changes for both companies; Pacific Coffee Corp., under new management decided to switch from Arabica beans to Robusta beans! This move was met with mixed reactions from consumers who preferred their Arabica beans while many smaller producers continued producing Arabica coffees until about 1961 when all but two (~50%) of America’s major coffee bean buyers switched over to Robusta production!!! In 1951 Stanley Fischer purchased Wapato Coffee Mill from George Hargrave ending Wapato’s involvement in coffee processing!! Fischer would continue lead Wapato through several successful years before selling it in 1957!! ensuing operations were conducted by his son Stanley Fischer Jr., grandson Stanley Fischer III & great granddaughter Vicki Fischer till 1984 when it reverted back under father Stanley's ownership again until 1992 when it passed away altogether leaving behind a beautiful legacy including world-renowned factory No 2 known today only as “Stanley Fischers Coffee Roasters Inc” !!! It should be noted that even though father Stanley Fischer Sr.'s ownership lapsed following his death in 1984 there remain descendants associated with this business still running today !!
