In 1907–08 a group of 5 businessmen founded Hanna-Barbera Productions Incorporated as a movie production company; its primary purpose was creating cartoons for local theaters across King County (of whichCentralia had several). The company produced over 100 short films before ceasing operations in 1950s because of expensive hardwood film stock shortages and other issues related to Hollywood industry changes during World War II. When war broke out in 1939 Seattle’s economy took off as many young men enlisted in service than did any other city throughout America due mostly to food rationing going on at that time (during these times most Americans lived self-sufficiently). This increased demand for goods led some businesses downtown including Hanna-Barbera Productions where work began on new products including animation features for children's television shows such as "Bleepy Birds" and "Petrie Street Fair".
