Camas, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Camas were fur traders who took advantage of its rich soil and abundant resources during the 18th century. In 1851, entrepreneur John Davenport founded the town on land he had purchased from the Wapato tribe. He named it after his home state of Oregon. A post office was established in 1852 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1909. A railroad station was built in Camas in 1895 and served as a junction for several trains running between Seattle and Tacoma. The town's population boomed during World War I due to military recruitment by America's warring factions (the Allies versus Germany). In 1921, Camas became one of five towns incorporated withinKing County when it was created as a result of the 1920 consolidation of King and Snohomish counties into one government under then-Governor Harry Herrod. At that time, Camas consisted of just over 100 residents and two businesses; most growth came from annexation by neighboring towns such as Kent or Auburn during subsequent years. The town experienced significant growth following World War II thanks to wartime production assistance from both Japan and America; camels were among the many products exported from Camas through local transport companies such as Canuck Transport Company (later Canuck Trucking). Camas is a small town located in the Yakima Valley of Washington and is considered to be part of the Centennial Hills region. The community was founded in 1892 by George Isham, who began construction on a farm there. In 1907, Camas became the county seat for Yakima County and has been located there ever since. The first post office in Camas was established in 1893, and it remained in operation until 1911. The current post office building was built in 1912 and is still used today. Camas has had several different names over the years, including Butte Creek Settlement, Dry Gulch Settlement, Horseshoe Bend Ranch, Indianhead Landing, and Prairie View Heights. It was renamed Camas after John Camas (1827-1912), an Irishman who came to America around 1854 and settled near what is nowCamas. Mr. Camas donated land to the town in 1892 and helped finance its establishment. The original store buildings were built around 1906-07 using local lumber that had been acquired from logging operations on adjacent hillsides. The first school opened school in 1915; however, it closed due to lack of funds about half way through that year’s term. A new school building was completed c 1920 with support from local parents/guardians who pooled their resources together to build it as a model for other nearby schools which continued to operate even when funding arrived from elsewhere throughout the 1920s & 1930s%.
