In 1916, the Camas National Guard became an Army Reserve unit and in 1948 it was redesignated as the Camas Volunteer Fire Department. The volunteer fire department servingCamas County had been organized in 1907. The National Guard or Army Reserve Unit providing protection to our community began its service in 1916 when members of the local military unit were called to active duty for World War I hostilities. During World War II, many members of the Camas Volunteer Fire Department were called into service with other units due to shortages of men in their respective branches of the military. The present day Camas National Guard is a Hispano American Legion unit and is made up mostly of individuals from various fields such as business, education, law enforcement and agriculture . It has consisted mostly of volunteers since its creation in 1948 however recent enlistments have included several soldiers from Fort Lewis who are currently deployed overseas with Operation Iraqi Freedom

The Camas National Guard was organized on December 14, 1907. The first commander of the Camas National Guard was Lieutenant Colonel John P. Hildebrandt and the organization grew rapidly with the addition of other states to the Union in 1912. The Camas unit is one of only a few national guard units in Washington State and it has served continuously since 1917.

An administrative village also existed within the boundaries ofCamas between 1909-1912; it was known as North Vancouver after North Vancouver Landing on Elliott Bay which served as its original portage
