Camas is a small town in the state of Washington located about 60 miles northeast of Seattle. It is one of the most economically depressed towns in the United States and has a population of just over 1,000. The first coffee roasters in Camas were likely Native Americans who grew and processed beans near the current location of Camas Lake. In 1892, John Burbank started brewing coffee for local merchants in what is now downtown Camas. He was followed by J.M. Allen & Sons, which became known as "the best-quality Coffee House on Earth." In 1922, Harry Thomas opened his own shop and began making high-quality coffee that would be served at local hotels and restaurants. Over time, many other businesses have come to contribute to theCamas Coffee Industry including Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and Peet's Coffee Company. Today, there are more than 30 cafes inuse within walking distance of each other serving quality coffee from all over the world. The Camas River forms the eastern border of Washington and Oregon. The Camas area was first settled in the 1830s by Pacific Northwest Indians, who called it Quinault. The name is derived from Spanish camas, meaning “cedar” or “oak.” In 1847, a group of Mormon missionaries arrived in the area and named the river after Brigham Young, one of their founders. In 1863, when Oregon became a state, Camas was made a town within Oregon. Today, Camas is part of the city of Redmond on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Oregon Route 22 runs through town and crossed the Camas River near its outlet into Puget Sound in 1922. A new bridge was built over the river in 1971 and carries US-101 across it at milepost 5A. The old Bridge Street Bridge (now SR-222) spans over the river just south of Interstate 5 between US-101/SR-22 and Redmond Boulevard/SR-224; it carried State Route 99 Alternate (SR-224). It was replaced by a new bridge built over I-5 just east of SR 222 in 2003 as part of a program to improve access to Everett from nearby streetscape improvements elsewhere on I-5 northbound and southbound: see photo below right for an aerial view taken during construction).

In 1795, French chemist Louis Pasteur discovered that growing beans under specific conditions produces different flavors and aromas, which gave birth to flavored coffees such as ropy blackstrap molasses (now called Kona) and cedarwood. World War II interrupted further development until 1966 when Whole Grain Coffee Corporation was founded to bring espresso-quality coffee back into wide distribution.
Moses Camas was born on thesimilitude of day in 1805. He was a fur trader and landowner who played an important role in the early history of Washington. Moses Camas arrived in what is now Washington Territory in 1827, and soon began trading with the native peoples. In 1830, he purchased 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land at Whatcom Inlet from Chief Yakima for $5 per acre. This purchase laid the groundwork for his future success as a businessman and landowner in Washington Territory. Moses Camas lived an active life, developing his Rancho de la Purísima Concepción which ran from Whatcom Inlet to La Push on Puget Sound. He also served as a delegate to the first Territorial Legislature and helped create many of the foundations that would make Washington State so successful during its early years. After Moses Camas' death in 1852, his rancho continued to be prosperous until it was sold off by his descendants in 1917. Today, part of this property forms part of Mount Rainier National Park while another part is used as farmland near Everett, WA.
Camas was founded in 1853 by Captain George Vancouver and his party of HMS Discovery. The name is derived from the local Quechan word "camas," meaning "place where white people live." The town was originally located on the sites of present-day Pullman and Tacoma, Washington. In 1892, Camas became a city.
