The Camas Army National Guard is one of the oldest in Washington state. It was organized on December 12, 1855, at the fort built by Spanish General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on the present-day site of Camas. The first unit raised in Camas was a company of volunteers called “Camas Volunteers”. The first real battle fought by the Camas Army National Guard was against Mexican soldiers nearpresent-dayEverett on February 24, 1858. The victory by the guard over these troops marked an important event in the history of this unit and in Washington State as a whole. In 1861, after Oregon became a state, Camas became part of Multnomah County and its army garrisoned its own post at Fort Stevens for that year’s war with Lane County. In 1862 it joined Captain John A. Slocum’s brigade under General Douglas MacArthur during his campaign against Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sibley’s Legion west of Corvallis. In 1865 it assisted in suppressing a slave insurrection at Walla Walla River canyon and later served as an infantry detachment under Brigadier General David Capps during his march upslope to join General George Armstrong Custer at Lewiston Junction where he encountered Creek Indian warriors led by Chief Joseph Kappes. From 1868 until 1870 it guarded Multnomah Arsenal while construction proceeded on what would become Portland; that year militia companies from various parts of Oregon were mustered into service to help with munitions supplies arriving from California via Columbia River Crossing points above Bendigo (now Salem). When those supplies ran out in 1871, camas units took their place within Portland’s military establishment; they remained there until 1945 when all civil defense units were disbanded and placed within the newly created Portland Police Bureau organization
