Burien is a small town in Washington state. It is located on the shore of Puget Sound, about 15 miles northwest of Seattle and 20 miles northeast of Tacoma. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Burien has a busy harbor that provides access to Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, as well as much of the Cascade Mountains to the east. The town is also home to Boeing's 747 manufacturing plant and other industry. The first European settlers in what is now Burien were Dutch traders who arrived in 1607. A grant from King George III was received in 1792 for land along the sound on which Burien now stands. In 1853, John Jacob Astor founded his Pacific Railroad here, making it one of the busiest commercial ports on Puget Sound. In 1907, Boeing Corporation began production at its 777-200 aircraft factory here; this helped create an important local economy that still persists today. The area around Burien was heavily bombed during World War II by Japanese forces; however, little damage was done to the community itself. After the war ended, many residents decided to return and rebuild following devastation caused by firebombing during the war years. Burien, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. It is the administrative center of Burien Township and was established in 1853. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Burien was John Swearingen, who arrived with his family on June 5, 1853. He built a cabin on what is now First Avenue and Second Street. In 1854, George Wills founded the town of Burien and named it after himself – though he never set foot there. In 1865, John Everson purchased the land thatMake Way had earlier donated to the town. The following year saw another milestone when Swearingen's grandson Cyrus erected the first sod house in what is now First Avenue and Third Street. In 1887, Robert Crain opened a store in what is now First Avenue and Fourth Street; this was followed by other businesses such as A & M Grocery until 1906 when Harry Earle opened his grocery store on Fourth Street which remains an open-air shopping center today. streetcar service from Seattle to Burien began on November 15th 1886 using horsespulled carts called "The Cripples" which ran every ten minutes during peak hours; however due to heavy snowfall most services were cancelled for several weeks that winter.. In 1902-1903, $5,-worth of dynamite went off near Main and Cherry Streets (now part of Interstate 5) as part of a test explosion for an upcoming power plant; however no damage or injuries were reported.. In 1907-1908*, two brothers – Harry Earle Jr., Fred Smith – built a farmhouse at 1300 S Main Avenue just east of present day First Ave./Third St.. This property became known as 'The Earles'. The farm continued to be used by them until their sale to Clifford Olson in 1958* (*This history only includes events that took place within King County).
