The first air force deployed gift history to Burien, Washington on December 8, 1941. The air force stationed the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress at the nearby King County Airport. The gift was given to First Lieutenant Harry L. Smith by Major General George C. Marshall in commemoration of the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th, 1941.
Burien is a small town in Washington State, located on the border of Snohomish County and King County. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bellevue-Everett-Renton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European sighting of what would become Burien was by Lt. James Cook on November 12, 1792 while on his way to Bothell Island to explore what lay beyond Puget Sound. He sighted a point near present-day Burien and called it Kalla Point, after his ship HMS "Kalla" which had sample taken there in 1801. On April 15, 1865, during the Civil War, Confederate Captain Alfred Leroy Morrison set up an artillery battery just south of present day Burien and fired upon Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army as it moved through that area towards Goldsboro. This event is commemorated by a tablet at Goldsboro National Battlefield & Cemetery (#2), east of downtown Burien. Burien post office opened in 1907 and closed in 1978; its name was changed to Everett Post Office after nearby Everett became an incorporated city in 1959). The first building built in town was the Everett School Annex which served as the high school for many years before being replaced with two more buildings: one serving as a library and another serving as a gymnasium/ auditorium (now known as First United Methodist Church). In 1951, Burien High School also merged into Everett High School becoming one comprehensive school with all grades under one roof! “When I came here from Seattle 25 years ago there were no paved streets or sidewalks – only dirt roads … Today we have everything! We are proud of our town’s progress since then” said Mayor Rick Liedtke when he took office in 2009 In recent years there has been an effort made to bring back some form of commerce to the community – most notably a small grocery store opening up next door to First United Methodist Church last year which has seen renewed development around it including apartments and businesses currently being planned or under construction

Burien, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Burien" is derived from the local Kwakwaka'kamish language word meaning "old man's house." The first permanent settler in what is now Burien was Jacob Rasmussen, who arrived on July 3, 1851. He and his wife were the first white people to reside in what is now King County. In 1853, Rasmussen donated land to the county for a town site. The first public meeting of Burien Township was held on November 6th of that year under the leadership of Mayor John Matteson and commissioners Nathan Sorenson and George Henson. On January 8th of 1856, Burr Ridge Cemetery opened as part of Burien Township with interments started by Reverend G E Rasmuson and Mr. P B Browning. In 1865-66 an act passed by the Territorial Legislature designated Seattle as Puget Sound's new capital and authorized creation of a city government within its boundaries. On January 14th of that year Burien became one of Seattle's six original wards (the others being Ballard, Bothell, Everett, Fremont Falls/Narrows/Duncanville/Pioneer Square). The first election to be held within City limits took place on February 17th when James A McCann was elected mayor followed by Wm C Moffat as vice-mayor
