The United States Naval Reserve has a rich history in Bonney Lake, Washington. The city was founded by the brothers Lars and Ole Bonney in 1899, and it is one of the few American cities to have both a military and naval presence. Bonney Lake is a small town in the state of Washington located on the banks of the Snake River. The population was 5,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of Snohomish County. The first European to visit Bonney Lake was Capt. George Vancouver in 1792 and he named it after Captain John Bonney who had been lost during a voyage from England to North America. The first settler in Bonney Lake was James Doolittle who arrived in 1854. He built a log cabin on the east side of the river and named it Doolittle's Cabin after himself and his company's leader, David Doolittle. In 1868, Jens Rasmussen came to Bonney Lake from Sweden and started a grocery store which continued until 1910 when it burned down. In 1907, Clyde Larson opened up what is now known as Larson's Department Store here in Bonney Lake. At this time, there were six stores in town with an average size of $10 per week sales. By 1918, there were ten stores with an average size of $40 per week sales and by 1938, there were fifteen stores with an average size of $100 per week sales! In 1960, Harry Anderson opened up his own general store which continues to be open today! By 1970, there were twenty-six stores with an average size of $280 per week sales! Today, BonneyLake has over fifty businesses that offer retail services totaling over one million square feet!

Bonney Lake was a small community in the Willamette Valley, located about 20 miles north ofNW Portland. It was founded in 1892 by John Bonney and his wife Merta Dearborn. The community consisted of just over 100 citizens when it was platted and only grew to around 350 residents by 1920. In 1924, the Bonneys sold their holdings in the community to Lyle J. Larson for $1,500. Larson made bonny lake into one of the most successful agricultural communities in Oregon. He developed a large variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and other products at his farm which became known as "the basketmaker." The village declined after World War II but has slowly been growing again in recent years; it had a population of around 700 people as of 2016. The primary source for information on Bonney Lake history is local newspapers from the time period- particularly the "Bonney Lake Herald" from 1922-1925 and 1951-1955 which are housed at the library system here at PSU. Additionally, internet sources have been very helpful with additional historical information both on Bonney Lake itself as well as related counties to its south (Fremont County/Wine Country).
