The history of the army in Bonney Lake, Washington goes back to 1861. The first military unit in the town was a company of volunteers called the "Bonney Lake Rifle and Volunteer Battalion." The battalion was organized on December 15, 1861, and consisted of thirty-six men. It served as an infantry regiment during the American Civil War. On October 3, 1865, the battalion disbanded and its members returned home. In 1876, a new brigade was raised in Bonney Lake for the U.S. Cavalry Forces under command of Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer. This brigade numbered 1,500 men plus officers and enlisted men frombonney lake and surrounding towns. The brigade fought in several campaigns against Apache Indians in Arizona during 1877-1878. After returning to BonneyLake in late 1878, the brigade disbanded on November 30th due to lack of resources. On January 11th, 1889, a new brigade was raised consisting of 1,500 cavalry troopers from Bonney Lake under command of Brigadier General Winfield Scott Hancock Jr.. The brigade participated in several campaigns against Apaches along with other troops during 1889-1890; it also fought at White Sands Riot on September 14th 1890 which ended with a bloody battle between Native Americans and American forces On July 20th 1899 a detachment from this Brigade (1st Infantry) became part of 4th Infantry Regiment when that regiment was organized at Spokane Army Depot . Allegheny Regional Division Headquarters ordered 9 companies (1st Battalion Reserve Company A) & HQ Coy 2nd Battalion RR commanded by Capt Wm Halsey Beal assigned to duty at Fort Snelling ILL august 1899 effective date ....... these detachments were redesignated 2d Infantry Regiment february 1900 ....... these companies were reorganized as 1st Battalion RR february 1900 ....... they remained attached until december 1940
Bonney Lake is a town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,579 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Columbia River. The name Bonney Lake is Native American and means "place where many salmon swim." The town was platted in 1883 by J.D. McKay and others with the purpose of supplying a port for the grain trade between Yakima and Portland, Oregon. A post office was established at Bonney Lake in 1889, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. As one of the few towns on what would become Yakima County that did not develop primarily as agricultural or fruit-growing community, Bonney Lake has seen a variety of businesses come and go over its history: grocery stores (1903-2007), an auto dealership (1959-present), a metal shop (1963-present), boatbuilding (1966-2006) – all before becoming an incorporated city in 2006 when it annexed land from neighboring Lynden Heights. In recent years there has been emphasis placed on revitalization efforts around transportation options; including both new development near the center of town as well as renovation/ rehabilitation of aging facilities within blocks of each other. One such project is presently under way to restoration/replacement of sidewalks along U Street which runs through downtown Bonney Lake; this will also include installation of new streetlights throughout town as part of a larger beautification initiative spearheaded by Mayor Dick Kriegel and Councilmember Dona Jensen
