Military gift history in Bellingham, Washington began with the Bellingham Light Infantry Regiment in 1875. The regiment was organized to provide a militia force for defense of the town during the still unsettled Puget Sound region. The unit served until 1898 when it was disbanded. The next military gift to arrive in town was an armory and rifle range opened by Major General George Armstrong Custer on November 10, 1899. This addition to the town’s infrastructure helped makeBellingham one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America at that time. In 1915, General Douglas MacArthur arrived in Bellingham as commander of American forces occupying Japan following World War 1. He ordered the creation of a United States Military Academy at Fort Snelling, Minnesota which would train future American commanders. During World War II, local businesses became involved in supplying munitions to our armed forces and many donations were made by citizens or businesses throughout the war years. Examples include: an ammunition dump on First Hill overlooking downtown; seven trucks filled with machine gun rounds donated by Tacoma truck salesman Harry Ahern; contributions from Pacific Gas & Electric Company; donations from various civic organizations such as Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and School District (now called King County) for use within army camps located throughout Northwest America; and even a Junkers Ju-52 transport aircraft donated by Boeing Aircraft Co., Seattle for use as an air cargo plane for supply missions into Japan

Bellingham is a city in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. The population was 20,876 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Whatcom County and home to the Bellingham Naval Air Station. The first people to live in what is now Bellingham were two groups of Haida natives who called themselves "Tleilaxu". They arrived onshore from their traditional territory in present-day Vancouver Island about 1790. The name "Bellingham" comes from their language word for "comb" or "toothpick." The first white person to live in what is now Bellingham was Captain Alexander ball that founded the town on July 12, 1825 while he was captain of HMS Discovery under Rear Admiral John Barry. The town grew rapidly due to its location between Puget Sound and Lake Washington and its natural resources including timber, salmon fishing, coal mining and lumbering. In 1853, when Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of a naval air station at Bellingham Harbor, it was decided that the town would be named after Commodore George Dewey who had been Commandant of Naval Air Station Seattle since 1849. In honor of Commodore Dewey's contributions to naval aviation during World War I and II, a plaque honoring him has been placed within the harbor entrance adjacent to USS Olympia (CVA-11) where she served as flagship during her three world tour campaigns in 1919-1920 In 1937 Microsoft founder Bill Gates bought land adjacent to his childhood home for $2 million and began construction on his first office building which became known as Microsoft Park; today'sieving center for technology companies throughout North America. Gates also donated over ,000 sq ft (190 m²) of land along with an artificial glacier which served as his family's summer home until they sold it in 2007 In 1990s there was much debate surrounding plans by then Mayor Mills to demolish most public housing in order build upscale condominiums; however many residents fought back with protests culminating with a sit-in at City Hall which lasted thirteen days before police used tear gas and pepper spray against protesters

Bellingham is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,811 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of King County. The town was established by Captain George Vancouver on December 7, 1821 as a stop on his ill-fated trip to Asia with the Royal Navy. After only two months, Captain Vancouver abandoned the settlement and returned home after finding that there were no goods available for sale or trade. He recommended that the town be named Port Townsend because of its proximity to Puget Sound and its potential for shipping trade between Puget Sound and Asia. On January 14, 1822, the first post office in Bellingham opened under the name "Port Townsend". In 1830, when Washington became a state, it included what is now King County and Bellingham Township was added to create what is nowKing County Superior Court District 2. By 1840, however, Bellingham had shrunk back to its original size and no new development had taken place in over 25 years; accordingly it was renamed "Bellingham" once again on February 15th due to lack of interest from residents in maintaining their former name given their dwindling population size. In 1886–87 three brothers - John C., Kenneth A., and Archibald H - built a sawmill in central Bellingham near where Hastings Road meets Interstate 5 (later I-5). Three more mills were built during this time: one by brothers Charles Firths in 1928; another by brothers Harry Jorgensen and John Poulsen at Snoqualmie Falls in 1961; and still another mill by brother Ivanhoe Hawkesbury in 1984 just north of downtown. These mills helped revive the economy of central Bellingham which before then had been largely agricultural based with limited manufacturing options outside of agriculture or government contract jobs during peacetime due to prohibition laws against manufacturing weapons during wartime times. On October 4th 1909 an Act incorporating Seattle & Tacoma Railway Company was passed by Congress setting up a railroad connecting Seattle with Tacoma via Tacoma through what are now Everett/Bellevue/Everett Junction along Interstate 5 (now called I-5) while also building additional tracks through Beacon Hill towards downtown Seattle providing passage for large steamboats loading cargoes such as coal from mines west of Ballard into Seahawks Harbor for export down Elliott Bay to Japan
