Bellingham is a city on the Puget Sound Peninsula in King County, Washington. The population was 31,479 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and most populous city in Washington. The name "Bellingham" means "blessed by Bell." The first white person to set foot in what is now Bellingham was Lorenzo Dowling, who landed there on July 3, 1792 during his extended journey from Bothell to Mount Vernon. He named the area around present-day Bellevue after Sir John Franklin's home town of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dowling's discovery of Juan de Fuca Strait and land beyond it led him to make Mills River his new base of operations for exploring Puget Sound and its natural resources. The first post office in what is now Bellingham opened in 1851. By 1860, over 60 businesses had established themselves along Bellevue Avenue within five blocks of each other; this commercial atmosphere helped spur development along Hwy 9 which ran through downtown Ballmer until 1915 when it was widened to four lanes forMotor vehicle traffic only. In 1883 a large water tower/pump station became one of the first industrial buildings in Seattle; this building still stands today as part of CenturyLink Field complex (see photo). In 1901 President Grover Cleveland announced he would be traveling eastward across North America on an imperial visit so that he could inspect railroads being built between Chicago and points north; upon learning of Bellingham's location he ordered flags flown at half-mast throughout the city to show mourning for American fatalities lost while accompanying him on his trip. Bellingham is a small town in southeastern Washington and the seat of King County. The population was estimated at 95,512 in 2010, making it the third-largest city in King County after Seattle and Bellevue. It is home to the University of Washington and many other cultural attractions. The first settlement in what is now Bellingham occurred on December 12, 1854 when two pioneers, Jacob Riis and his son Miller agreed to purchase 2,000 acres (810 hectares) of land from the Yakima Nation for $5 per acre. This area would later become part of Bellingham Township. In 1855, three brothers founded the Bellingham Brewery which became one of the largest breweries in Washington Territory. Today, Bellingham Brewing produces over 100 different beers and sells them online and at more than 20 locations throughout Western Washington. In 1861 during the American Civil War, James Wickersham set up a military post called Fort George Hill on land now known as Fort Pointe Island. On October 10th that year he ordered construction of a lighthouse to be conducted by local contractor Alfred Pogue. The lighthouse was completed on November 8th 1870 but due to poor weather conditions it never went into service; it has been described as "one of America's most puzzling relics." A new lighthouse was finally built on Point Elliott by order of President Ulysses S Grant in 1889 following an outcry from residents because they thought their old lighthouse had been lost forever! In 1865 USS Monitor fought off a Confederate attack against USS Constitution off Cape Disappointment; this event is also known as BattleOfWaspIsland(1865). On May 16th 1888 Mrs Emma Willard donated 5 acres (2 ha) at present day Pioneer Square for use as a public park named after her husband Caleb Willard who had died five years earlier while working for Puget Sound Ferry Company near Olympia Fields along with his father John Wesley Willard Sr.. The first sod was laid for Park Reserve on July 15th 1888 by Mayor Augustus Ewing Jr.. In 1925 Kiewit Steel Corporation relocated their plant from Tacoma to Mill Creek Valley east of downtown Seattle; this left Bellingham without any steel production until 1973 when they reopened their plant there too. After decades without production various businesses moved away or closed down over time such as Safeway which opened down State Street in 1961 followed by JCPenney which closed its doors within 3 years Belligham experienced significant growth starting around World War II when Boeing began producing airplanes here including both bombers and trainers like Boeing 707s and 737s entered service operated out of Renton Airport adjacent to current-day Northgate Mall before retiring all twin-engine planes operations in 2001 . One result was significant demolition taking place across downtown with much property becoming open space . Significant projects during this time include renovation/updates to CenturyLink Field adding luxury suites (2001), reactivation/relaunching waterfront trail system (2006), installation/activation OfEverettWA's first LED streetlights(2009), additions TonwashingtonStateUniversity Campus buildings housing multimillion dollar endowed research funds(2011) etc.—all while keeping properties intact well into today’s decade
The first European settlement in what is now Bellingham was in 1792 when Captain George Vancouver and his crew discovered the Puget Sound. The area that is now Bellingham was originally part of the Russian Empire, and as a result, there is evidence of Russian influence dating back to at least 1810. In 1821, the United States acquired federal status and began development of its west coast. As Washington became more developed, it attracted entrepreneurs and new settlers who founded businesses such as logging, farming, fishing and lumbering in what would become known as the Pioneer Valley. A number of mills were built along the Willamette River between Tacoma and Olympia during this time period; these included the Mount Baker Mills from 1859-1862 and Congress Flour Mills from 1865-1867. In 1881, John Wesley Powell explored Bellingham Bay on his way to find a water route to California through Alaska. On July 14th he reached latitude 43°N while on his way southbound; this would later be called “the discovery of Lake Placid” because it marks where he first observed ice in Puget Sound. From here he continued southwestward until he reachedlatitude 47°N on October 15th which would be known as “the discovery of Whitney Glacier” because Ulysses S Grant named it after James Whitney who led an expedition to explore that area not long afterward.
