Bellingham, Washington is a city located in King County, Washington. The population was 73,813 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in King County after Seattle and the fifth most populous city of all time with over 1 million residents. The Bellingham area has been inhabited by people for at least 8,000 years and may have been founded as early as 10,000 BC. The first European to explore the area was Captain John Bainbridge in 1802. In 1851, Bellingham became a town and was chartered as an incorporated municipality by Governor Isaac Stevens. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1907, Bellingham annexed the neighboring town of Lynnwood and became one of the largest cities in Washington state. Bellingham is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County and home to the University of Washington. The first human settlement in what is now Bellingham was established by Captain George Vancouver on land he purchased in 1792 from the Puyallup Tribe. The town site was chosen because it lay near the recently discovered Puget Sound and its potential shipping routes. The name "Bellingham" derived from a local Indian word meaning "place where a lotus blossom grows." In 1851, Bellingham became part of Seattle when that city was incorporated as a town. In 1909, Seattle annexed most of King County and renamed it as Seattle-King County; Bellingham remained an unincorporated community until 1954. In 1955, however, Bellingham voted to become an incorporated city again under its own laws rather than continue to be an unincorporated rural township with no voting rights. That same year, the University of Washington opened its doors for the first time in history and soon called Bellingham home; today's university dates back to 1881 when it merged with Olympia Technical College (now Olympia Pacific University). During World War II, much activity took place within and around Bellingham due to Boeing's Aircraft Manufacturing Company's aircraft productionfacilities located there including two massive plants – one used for bombers during daylight hours while the other produced fighter planes at nightfall or during phases of high secrecy. After Pearl Harbor both plants were closed but production continued at Bellevue until 1945 while other facilities were converted into housing developments such as Northgate Village near downtown and South Pointe on Lake Union which housed workers for Boeing Heavy Airplane Factory #3 between 1940–1945 before being razed for new development in 1949-1955 inclusive.
