The history of the navy in Bellevue, Washington goes back to 1907. At that time, the city had a small military detachment known as the Naval Militia. The militia was created to provide security for local shipping and navigation during naval exercises and other events. The navy also provided help with local fishing enterprises. In 1916, Bellevue became one of the first cities in America to establish its own harbor department. This department helped improve and maintain Bellevue's harbors. In 1923, the city began purchasing shares in the Puget Sound Navigation Company, which would later become part of Seattle-Tacoma Chamber of Commerce. In 1928, Bellevue joined the American Federation of Labor (AFL). During World War II, Bellevue played an important role in supplying munitions to the war effort. In 1945, after Japan's surrender, parts of Seattle were reoccupied by Japanese forces and Bellevue was among those areas. However, due to its neutrality stance at war's end, Bellevue remained unaffected by this conflict. After World War II ended, many businesses closed down and people left town; however, few changes took place within the community until 1968 when it merged with neighboring Redmond into a new city called Redmond-Bellevue Combined Statistical Area (CSRA). Since then there have been several expansions and renovations to Navy Community House - including a renovation completed in 2013 that added a sixth floor - as well as an addition to Navy Pier which doubled as a performing arts center and home for various youth activities throughout year long period including special events such as Mariners' Charity Ball . There has also been growth within nearby neighborhoods such as Capitol Hill which offers much more access on both sides of I-5 than did years ago thanks to redevelopment efforts led by Mayor Ed Murray . The first European settlers in what is now Bellevue were Scottish immigrants who founded a small farm near present-day Lake Union in 1847. In 1888, Snohomish County commissioners voted to annex what is now Bellevue because it had become an important commercial and industrial center due to its location on Puget Sound and its natural resources such as coal and lumber. The name "Bellevue" was chosen because it sounded like "a English country house." The first post office in BellevUE opened in 1893; it served the town of Maple Valley until 1907 when it moved to Everett to be closer to Interstate 5 (then called Seattle). The first store built in BellevUE was the Elmira Cheese Store which operated from 1897-1902 by Wm Fenton & Bros.. By 1912 there were six stores open including two tobacco stores: J&J Tobacco Co., Inc., founded 1905 by John Jameson and his brother Jack Jansen (the brothers later took over another store also located Downtown) The growth of transportation made Belleve UE an important urban center for many years with many businesses that catered to travelers traveling along I-5 or boat accessible from downtown across Hwy 99W: Biltmore Hotel & Casino Resort - Opened 1995; Renaissance Tower - Opened 2003 In 1928, local developer Harry Hasbrouck bought majority interest in Everett’s Everett Air Force Base property which he used for development into what would eventually become BellevUE. The following year saw completion of First National Bank building which anchored Main Street today while Workman Cigar Factory No 2 flagship store opened on Airport Way east of First National Bank just south of Harmon Place where current day Safeway stands today
