They fought on both sides of the war and are credited with saving many lives during combat including those of Sgt William Henson who was instrumental in saving two hundred enemy soldiers from capture by Japanese forces at Eddystone airfield on March 15th, 1918. After World War I ended, Marines returned home to campaign in Korea and Vietnam before finally returning to America in 1970. Today, there are more than 650 Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton located near San Diego which is home to Headquarters Squadron 2nd Marine Division (HSS2).

Battle Ground is a census-designated place (CDP) in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pullman–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Battle Ground community is located on the east bank of the Snake River, approximately midway between Pullman and Lakewood. The first white person to live in what is now Battle Ground was John Jacob Astor in 1836. He built a trading post there on the site of present day Astoria Bank. In 1868, General Ulysses S. Grant's forces fought an engagement at Battle Ground that resulted in one dead and several wounded American soldiers being taken prisoner; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of American military involvement in Central Washington region during the Civil War era. The battle ground was home to an early army depot where wagons were unloaded for use by Union troops during the Civil War; it also served as a supply stop for Confederate forces operating in central Washington during that war). After 1865, Battle Ground passed through various hands until it became part of Clark County when it was created from parts of Snohomish and Kitsap counties on November 3, 1907. Today, Battle Ground remains an agricultural area with a few businesses based there; however, its importance as a military installation has not diminished over time and attendance at various events surrounding its history are still common occurrences throughout most years . On October 25, 1814, soldiers of the United States cavalry under the command of Major General Winfield Scott fought a pitched battle at Battle Ground in what is now Washington County, Kentucky. The Americans were successful in driving back the numerically superior French and Indian forces and capturing two cannons.
