The Bainbridge Island Air Force Base is a former United States military installation in the town of Bainbridge Island, Washington. It was opened on 1 July 1947 as the Bainbridge Island Naval Air Station, and served as an airbase for the United States Navy and later the United States Marine Corps. The base closed its doors on 30 June 1994 after serving its full complement of 34 years. Bainbridge Island Naval Air Station (BIANAF) played an important role during World War II and has been cited as one of America's "great naval air facilities". The facility was initially home to Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, which were used to bomb Japanese targets in the Pacific during World War II. BIANAF also hosted Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilots during antisubmarine warfare patrols off Japan during the war. After the end of World War II, BIANAF became home to Boeing B-29 Superfortresses used for strategic bombing missions over Japan. These aircraft were operated from then until 1951 when they were replaced by Douglas DC-3s which became operational at BIANAF beginning in 1948. The Douglas DC-3s continued to serve at BIANAF until their retirement in 1973; these planes are still remembered locally for their unique appearance and sound system which allowed them to be flown without headsets or headphones! In 1954, BIANAF was renamed Arthur Andersen AFB after Arthur Andersen who had donated land for the airport! In 1966, Andersen AFB was moved from Bainbridge Island to Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma Washington after it was transferred from NAS Seal Beach California! After seven years at Lewis McChord AFB, Andersen AFB returned back to Bainbridge Island on 14 October 1970! At this time it became known as USAAF Battle Creek Field/USMC Kaneohe Bay Field/Air Force Reserve Base #1! In 1978, Battle Creek Field/Kaneohe Bay Field/Air Force Reserve Base #2 split into two separate installations when Wright Patterson AFB activated there portion while Intermediate Area Commandactivated USAF Anchorage AF#1 there portion which continues today as US Airways mainline hub with supplemental service being offered by Northwest Airlines & Alaska Airlines terminals adjacent thereto !!! By 1984 however both installations had reverted back to their respective names!! On 1 July 1987 Battle Creek Field/Kaneohe Bay Field/Air Force Reserve Base #1 merged with nearby West Point AB (former Marine Barracks) becoming what is now known as Wright Patterson AF#2 – remnants of which still reside within Baker ID territory currently served by Clark County Sheriff’s Office SWAT teams operating out of WPGS Tactical Support Facility !! On 15 October 1988 another merger occurred when West Point AB merged with neighboring Lemhi Valley Army Depot becoming what is now Wright Patterson AF#3 !! However due largely to budget cuts within DoD various consolidation proposals have been made throughout recent years - most recently proposed changes that would merge all three installations into a single DoD installation called “Wright Patterson National Security Defense Center” !!! As yet no final decision has been made however much speculation exists given that if such a proposal does become reality it will likely impact many local businesses located within close proximity including Kmart & Sears locations along with surrounding shopping malls !! Furthermore there are fears that having a single DoD installation would lead to increased cost overruns & potential abandonment of projects should such Initiatives prove successful
