Auburn, Washington is a city in Cascades National Park that was founded in 1892. The population of Auburn was 5,747 at the 2010 census and 8,641 at the 2014 census. Auburn is the county seat for Grant County. It is located on both sides of the Willamette River and is bordered by Oregon to the west and east, as well as by Walla Walla County to the north. The area that would become Auburn was originally part of what were called Tulalip Reservation or "Tulalip country." In 1892, Congress passed an act creating Cascades National Park and giving it to Washington state. The original townsite for Auburn was developed around milepost 9 on US 99W (now SW 184th Street). The first school opened in 1902. By 1907, there were sixteen homes in town; however, growth continued slowly until World War I when war production increased and many people moved into town. In 1925, construction began on what would become the first school building in town; it was completed two years later and served as the downtown core from 1925-1929. During World War II, much of present day Auburn became home to military bases such as Fort Lewis and Boeing plants which produced munitions for America's defense against Japan. After World War II ended, most factories closed down but some remain active including Ingersoll Rand which still produces goods here today. The origins of tactical coffee date back to the early 1800s when soldiers and sailors began to drink coffee for its strong flavor and stimulant effects. In 1846, Captain John A. Macdonald of the United States Naval Forces in Cuba began importing Java beans, which he deemed as the best coffee variety for American troops. The first evidence that coffee was being used as a battlefield beverage can be found in 1847 when a battle between U.S. Marines and Spanish forces resulted in the death of five marines and one soldier with an overdose of caffeine from their chalaza (a type of coffee). Coffee's popularity among military personnel continued through the 1830s when it became part of army rations alongside sugar, tea, flour and other food items. By 1840, however, coffee had become associated with luxury instead of commonality among soldiers across different armies worldwide. This change came about due to two factors: first, because coffee was expensive to produce; second, because it took many years for new technologies to develop that could make espresso production cost-effective enough for mass market consumption by civilians. As such, most major armies ceased using espresso starting around 1850 due to its high costs and limited availability outside of militaries or special forces units who were able to purchase quality beans direct from originators like Captain John A Macdonald himself. With world wars I-III looming on the horizon, commanders turned increasingly towards artillery generals who could provide them with overwhelming firepower while they contend against enemy infantry squads or tanks head-on with only light arms fire available at their disposal.
