There is no question that coffee has been a vital part of the Arlington community for centuries. The first record of coffee being roasted in Arlington comes from 1792, when Nicholas-Jacques Conte imported two sacks of beans from Africa and placed them on the property of Captain John Foust. In 1807, Colonel Richard Rushmore purchased over 4 acres of land near present-day U.S. Route 1 and Putnam Street and began to grow coffee plants. In 1821, George Washington issued a proclamation prohibiting slavery in the United States, which led to an increase in slave trade through Arlington – one of the first cases of its kind in the country. As more slaves were brought into town, they required malt houses and other facilities to process their coffee. By 1830, there were eight malt houses located throughout Arlington – four on Putnam Street, two on Fairfax Avenue, one on Eads Street and one on Sibley Street. The early years of this century saw significant growth for coffee within Arlington as well as neighboring jurisdictions such as Prince George’s County and Loudoun County. At this time, different roasting techniques were used including French press methods (which developed out of necessity due to lack of space), percolator methods (used for weak cafés) and Belgian Press methods (developed becauseof superior beans). Roasters also experimented with blends including Ethiopian Yirgacheffe blend with Colombian Santos green beans which was highly praised by some critics for its unique flavor profile; Columbian Pumila Beans with Brazilian Teff Blend resulted in some interesting national award wins; while Indonesian Roka Coffee was popularized within the area after it won a prestigious gold medal at a World Expo held in Philadelphia in 1902. In 1912, General Electric Corporation acquired all rights to produce Koffee Klatch brand coffee products under license from Dutch brewing company Philips de Bruyn & Co.. This led to increased smuggling attempts by Ku Klux Klan members trying to purchase illegalKlatch coffees across our borders during prohibition era; however these efforts were eventually thwarted by law enforcement officials who caught sight of their activities firsthand. However not everyone was thrilled about this new development as it led to an increase in prices associated with high quality beansexportation – something many people found prohibitively expensive given today’s market rates for good quality coffees around the world*. In 1819, John Peter Russell developed a process for growing coffee plants that made it possible to produce large quantities of coffee at low cost. Roasters began importing raw coffee from Latin America in the early 1800s. The Colombian government purchased rights to grow coffee in Colombia in 1903 and protected its farmers from exploitation by large plantations. In 1938, Swiss Reformed pastor Jost Balthazar founded roaster Balthazar & Co., which became one of the largest roasters of premium quality coffee around the world. In 1971, Koffee Klatch co-founder Gary Vandemare bought out Balthazar's share of company for $2 million dollars making Koffee Klatch one of the largest private companies in the world. Since then, Koffee Klatch has been 336% larger than its predecessor!
