Arlington has a rich history and culture dating back to 1853 when its first settler, George Prentice, purchased land in what is now Arlington Heights. In 1924, Arlington was annexed by Seattle and became part of the city limits. The name "Arlington" originated from two places: one was near present-day Arthurdale Road and the other was in what is now Pioneer Square. The name stuck because it sounded like an old English name for Scotland - Albyn - which also happens to be the place where many people from Boston came for religious reasons during the early 1800s. The first community in what would become Arlington Heights grew up around a Methodist church that had been built there in 1853. By 1875, there were about 25 homes here; most of these were used as farmsteads or cottages for workers who labored on various public works projects nearby such as the construction of Tacoma's new courthouse and ferry landing on Lake Union which served as an important transportation link between Tacoma and Seattle. In 1924, whenSeattle expanded into its current boundaries including all of King County east of Interstate 90 (including Arlington), Arlington Heights became part of Seattle proper within city limits instead of continuing to serve as an enclave inside Everett or Kirkland neighborhoods like it had before. In 1949, when annexation resulting from Pierce County being formed made Arthurdale Rd., Pioneer Square and much surrounding farmland property owned by farmers withinKingCounty available for development into single-family homes/townhouses west of I-90,. This project started with just over 100 homes completed by 1957 but eventually reached 3200 units by 1978-. TodayArlington boasts more than 6000 residents making it one of King County’s largest communities by population size

In 1825, entrepreneur James Kenedy bought 5 acres (20,000 m²) near present day Crystal City and began developing it into a town called Kenedyville. He named his settlement after himself and donated all land within its borders to local organizations such as churches, schools and hospitals.[3] Kenedyville grew quickly because of its good natural harbor access and easy access to transportation resources such as waterwheels and roads. It became a thriving community with well-to-do citizens who were involved in commerce, government services and law enforcement. By 1830, Kenedyville had reached its peak population numbering over 1,500 people with businesses including three banks[4]. However, by 1835 events caused by panic that followed gold discoveries throughout western North America caused a severe decline in population totals across most parts of the country forcing many small towns across America to fall victim to economic downturns which led directly to civil strife during the mid 19th century American Civil War era).[5][6]:9
The first European to arrive in the region was Juan de la Cosa, who landed on what is now Arlington Island in May of 1622. The island had been part of the Spanish colony of San Francisco de Asís since 1599. In 1792, Washington and his fellow commissioners negotiated a purchase from Spain for 702 acres (250 hectares) of land on the Potomac River. The land became known as "Arlington".
