The Puget Sound Naval Ship Museum in Aberdeen, Washington is a museum that preserves the history of the Puget Sound Navy. The USS Constitution was built in 1846 and served as part of the United States Navy from 1847 to 1865. In 1912, the USS Tacoma was built and served in World War I before being destroyed in 1918. The Tacoma was acquired by the Puget Sound Naval Ship Museum and renamed USS Kitsap on February 3, 1984. The Kitsap served as a training vessel for naval officers until it was decommissioned on September 30, 1992. In 1995, the Kitsap was transferred to Japan as part of an exchange program between Japan's Imperial Japanese Navy and the United States Coast Guard. From 1998 to 2000, she operated as a training ship for Japanese navy officers at Yokosuka Naval Base before returning to Seattle on October 1st, 2000. She currently resides at Maritime Administration Pier #2 in Bremerton with her original decks replaced by new decking. There are now threeUSS Constitution ships preserved afloat-the San Francisco (1912), Tacoma (1984) and Kitsap (1992). Each has been donated by someone who loved her or him dearly and each has since become one of Aberdeen’s prized tourist attractions." The first USS Constitution class battleship was laid down on October 15th, 1846 at Norfolk Point Shipbuilding Company Ltd., Portsmouth VA by Captain John Cushing & Sons Ltd., under a contract with Congress dated December 22nd, 1845.[1] She keeled over on January 25th following sea trials which were successful[2]. On March 8th President James K Polk ordered all thirteen vessels put into commission including USS Constitution[3]. Commander Isaac Buttimore took command this inaugural day[4], but Commodore Nicholas Keyes assumed command upon Commodore John Rodgers transfer from USS Brooklyn effective April 2nd[5][6]. “On account of its great size – greater even than any other warship then afloat – it had been necessary to order two masts alone instead of three; thus there remained only one masthead space aft post-defaulting an Order issued five days previously for four masts” according to Richard Pohl though some sources claim that keyes preferred adopting this configuration due to his experience leadingBrooklyn during their engagement with Spanish privateers off Puerto Rico[7]. As mentioned earlier USS Constitution also possessed unique features such as screw propellers which allowed her slow speed making her more vulnerable when fighting enemy warships off shore however these devices were eventually removed from all but one subsequent US battleship class design[8] This new arrangement left Constitution with just two screws deemed too small for future propulsion requirements however they still remain characteristic features of many modern warships today. Construction proceeded rapidly under captain Buttimore’s guidance clocking in at just twenty eight weeks including eleven weeks above water Trials became reality November 4th [9] after reaching official completion date December 10th [10].
