In the 1700s, Norfolk was a strategic and military town. The area now known as Norfolk was first settled by English colonists in the early 1600s. The town rose to prominence during the American Revolution, when it played an important role in the Battle of Yorktown. In subsequent decades, Norfolk grew rapidly into a major economic center, thanks to its infrastructure and population growth. Today, Norfolk is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America and has become a popular tourist destination. The city’s history also includes significant connections to the military. For centuries, Norwich served as an important base for the British Army and Navy. The city’s fortifications were later redeveloped into one of America’s biggest military complexes – home to both World War II aircraft carriers and other ground forces. In recent years, Norwich has become a hub for international trade and investment – helping to expand its economy even further while maintaining its cultural significance. Nevertheless, despite its strong links to military culture and history, Norwich has never been without its ownMilitary Gift HistoryTM (MGBH) tales. Many of these stories date back to before WWII – when Norfolk was still part of the United Kingdom Empire! Here are just a few examples: 1) One of Peninsula Forge Armory’s earliest customers was King George III himself! In 1801, Peninsula Forge received orders from London asking for high-quality firearms Specifically designed for service in India – items that had not yet been available on American shores! The king ordered 24 pistols from Peninsula Forge and personally delivered them to Portsmouth Naval Dockyard where they were put through rigorous testing…resulting in certification that these new guns could fire accurately at close range! This illustrates how much importance Britain placed on weaponry during this time period!2) Another famous customer of Peninsula Forge during this era was Captain John Smith who purchased over 400 cannons from us between 1795-1800! These cannons came directly from Royal Arsenal in London – demonstrating just how much demand there was for quality cannon during those days!3) Just prior to WWII, we provided gifts for many notable individuals including Lord Bathurst (the Governor General of Canada), Sir John Ayscough (Chairman of Imperial Airways), Admiral Fisher (Chief Executive Officer at Jardine Matheson & Co.), Vice President Al Gore (Jr.) and many more…It is interesting that so many prominent people donated weapons or items related to their professions during this time period—a testament bothto our dedication to excellence within our industry &to the trust each individual placed in us 🙂4) Finally, another common recipient of Military Gift HistoryTM gifts during this era was Commander Harry Coker VC—who donated his collection of WWI vintage equipment including machineguns & tanks back into civilian use after being used by the War Office as battlefield training equipment!5) Throughout all these years there have been countless others who have benefited from our skills & expertise as Military Gift Historians….thank you for your contributions 🙂
