The history of the Army in Manassas, Virginia dates back to 1775. The British called this area "Newbern's Neck." George Washington was born here on April 6th, 1732. He was a captain in the Continental army and fought against the British during the American Revolution. In 1799, President George Washington made Manassas his headquarters. Lee defended Richmond against an attack by Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. On April 12th, 1861, Confederate General Stonewall Jackson attacked Union General John A. Federals at Monocacy Heights near Fairfax County Courthouse Square in Manassas Junction (now Shady Grove). Although outnumbered three to one by Confederate soldiers, Federals were driven back with heavy losses including Jackson himself dying after fighting two hours against overwhelming odds. This victory helped maintain Confederate control over Northern Virginia until 1865 when Union troops regained control of most of that state and Virginia became a Ulysses S. Grant national territory once again

Manassas is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. It is located on the Potomac River, about 8 miles (13 km) east of Centreville and 12 miles (19 km) north of Manassas Junction. The population was 3,098 at the 2010 census. The name "Manassas" comes from an Indian word meaning " forks in the river." The forks are due to two mountain ridges that meet near Manassas Junction. According to one source, early settlers named the area after General Washington's cavalry unit known as the 1st Dragoons. Another source claims that George Washington himself named the village after his father-in-law's family name, Manasseh. In 1757, Captain John Smith discovered what may have been the first permanent English settlement in North America at Point Lookout on James River. From this location he could see both rivers and potential land for development downriver which led him to establish a trading post here with other Native American chiefs in 1760. In 1762 Colonel John Forbes founded Forbes' Ferry Landing where he built a wharf for transporting goods up and down James River from Williamsburg overland wagon route to trade with nearby Indian villages upriver. The original manor house of Sir Thomas Mifflin (1721-1792), Surveyor General of Virginia under George Washington during much of its early history stood within present day Manassas Park neighborhood on Bush Street across from modern day FBI Headquarters just south of I-495 exit 7A/I-495 exit 9B/Edgewood Avenue). Mifflin also commissioned three churches in Prince William County - one serving as parish church for Swenzerstown; another was erected by Lt.-Colonel Amos Stoddard near what is now Arlington Cemetery; and lastly Mount Zion Congregational Church was built by Reverend Ebenezer Swanwick between 1768 and 1770 on land donated by Judge Abraham Winthrop Sr.. Mifflin died without issue and bequeathed his estate including several plantations including Monticello plantation along James River between 2007 & 2009 to descendants of his slave Emancipation who had owned him prior to his death free born African American male Enoch Randolph Custis IV who was Head Resident Agent for Foreign Missions Branch Supervisor District No 2 (Washington D C) when He came into possession thru intestate inheritance following woman freed black female enslaved by British Loyalist Colonel John Thomson Cockerell alias Richard Clement Cockerell aka Richard Eaton Cockerell & others her heirs Apparent As at March 20th 2009 when His Estate Left To His Negro Head Resident Agent For Foreign Missions Branch Supervisor District No 2 On Embassy Property At This Location When He Died A few days later One Hundred Negroes Were Summoned There And Appeard Before Me Under Military Guard With Their Colored Women Which Made Me Do What You Did Here On This Date And Alsoassert That They Were Sent By Me Toacquit The Widow Of Colonel Thomson Who Was Freed By Me About Two Weeks Ago After Her Husband Was Killed In Action In Afghanistan It is interesting that while much has changed since then such asUSA politics etc., most things such as geographical features remain largely unchanged despite being around for centuries! Grant at Cold Harbor when Confederate Major-General Peter Jettah shot out two cannons belonging to Ulysses S.'s Brigade commanded by Colonel Augustus Allen at 3:00 p.m.. This event is considered to be one of the turning points events during this pivotal battle On April 4th 1865, Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel Cincinnatus Holmes attacked Confederate strongpoints around Midlothian while Elizabeth City residents watched from their homes; resulting in 15 dead (9 soldiers and 8 civilians) with another 50+ injured Today there are several businesses that have been established within Manassas since its early days such as Wawa Supermarkets (founded 1973), FedEx Ground (opened 1984), Applebee’s (founded 1978), Best Buy(formed 1990), Petsmart(opened 1991), Victoria’s Secret(opened 2004).
