In addition to its economic importance, Hopewell also played a significant role in the history of Virginias early settlers. Hopewell was first settled by English colonists who arrived in 1607. The town originally consisted of just a few hundred residents, but it rapidly grew and became one of the most influential communities in early Virginia. By 1719, Hopewell had reached its peak as an important trading post and social hub on the eastern seaboard. In addition to its economic significance, Hopewell also play a significant role in the history of Virginias early settlers. The original inhabitants of Hopewell were primarily Englishmen from Southwark, England. Unlike many other settlements that were established throughout seventeenth century Virginia, Hopewell did not grow out of necessity – rather, it was founded because Captain John Smith felt that he needed new land to expand his business operations within colonial America. At first glance, this may appear to be an odd decision – after all, Smith had only just returned from his unsuccessful attempt to found Jamestown two years prior (click here for more information). However, upon closer inspection it becomes clear that Smith believed that he could use his new land to improve his business capabilities and create new opportunities for himself within colonial America. Consequently, when Smith arrived at Hopewell he immediately set about building a small community which would become one of the most important centers for trade and commerce within seventeenth century Virginia. As soon as Captain John Smith arrived at Hopeton he realized that there were several potential sites for his new colony – including those located near Williamsburg (the future capital city) and Newport News (near Hampton Roads). However, due to logistical reasons – namely the fact that both Williamsburg and Newport News were already heavily populated with British colonists –Smith decided against locating his colony near either site preferring instead to establish himself further south along the Potomac River (on what is now Fallujah). This choice likely reflected Smiths belief that Virginias growing population would eventually lead him back towards centralVirginia where he could continue expanding his business interests and build up another strong presence within colonial America.. Despite being slightly further away from both Williamsburg/Newport News and centralVirginia than planned -Smith still managed to achieve impressive results during his initial months at hopeton . For example - shortly after arriving at hopeton , captain john smith discovered numerous valuable iron ore deposits which subsequently led him to become one of the richest men in North America .
