Rutland, Vermont is an unincorporated community in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Burlington-South Burlington-Easton, VT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Rutland were French fur traders from Québec in 1602 and 1603. Englishmen also visited Rutland in 1609 and 1610; but it is not clear whether they were prospecting for land or trading with the natives. The first permanent settler in Rutland was Nicholas Moore, who arrived there in 1775. He built a small cabin on the site of present day North Park Street and named it North Park after his home town of Northampton, England (now north London). In 1805, John Chauncy purchased land east of present-day Middlebury Road from Nicholas Moore and founded what became known as Chauncy's Farmstead. By 1829, Chauncy had erected several buildings on what are now West Side Drive and South Main Street including a log cabin which he called "The White House." In 1834–35, Reverend Ezra Newcomb began construction of a Methodist church on what are noweast side drive and south main street. After building for about two years only six feet high out of solid rock he moved the platform up foursquare so that the choir could sing under one roof! This innovation was such a success that he continued to build churches throughout the 1830s until his death in 1865. His replacement as pastor was Drury Waddell who served from 1836 to 1840 before being appointed rector for Burlington County (1841–1845). During this time much progress was made within the community with education becoming more accessible and numerous families settling around Church Lane where today's Statehouse Complex stands. In 1861 Rev John Matson began construction of a meeting house on Church Lane which would become known as Matson's Meeting House later serving as both a school and parish hall until 1962 when it closed because its walls had rotted through due to extensive use by students during their summer vacation period!. In 1863 James Keneally established Keneally & Company grocery store located at 2 Front Street across from modern day Eden Prairie Mall after leaving his successful grocery store business located at 5 Front Street opposite Congregational Church (later First Congregational Church) where he had started it in 1851 while still teaching Sunday School Classes! Keneally quickly became well know throughout eastern Vermont for his delicious fresh produce items available from early morning until late at night! His store soon acquired statewide notoriety for stocking local wines however due to Prohibition repeal Kenealy&Company discontinued operations in 1933 following prohibition repeal!
