Burlington, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 7,551 at the 2010 census. The name Burlington comes from English settlers who called it Winooski or Westervelt and shortened the name to Burlington because of its location on an important route between New York City and Boston. The first Europeans to visit Burlington were the French on October 25, 1692, when they landed on the eastern edge of Lake Champlain and explored what would become Burlington. The Dutch also traveled through this area in 1692 before settling in Fort George on the southern bank of the river near modern-day North Avenue and College Street. In 1701, British colonists arrived in what is now Rutland County. One of their first acts was to establish a township here – Burlington Township – with land grants to various families. The original townships were composed primarily of rural land that had been confiscated from Native Americans during War for Independence operations. Colonel George Washington leased part of what is now Princeton Township from Burlington Township for $200 per year in 1775 as part of his efforts to form a government while still living among Native Americans. In 1802, Congress created another township here – Addison Township – after it discovered that several other areas around Vermont had been sold by the state to non-native people without proper compensation or notification to those affected. In 1825, Congress created Butternut Township after discovering that some adjacent farms had been given away without any consideration for ownership or use by those receiving them (this practice continued until 1955). Both Addison and ButternutTownships were merged into Burlington Township on February 1st1855 as part of statewide consolidation under President Grover Cleveland’s Department of Internal Affairs program known as “The Great Union” which aimed at creating uniformity throughout New England stateside under one government umbrella. So much so that even some buildings located within these two different townships are still considered part of both municipalities today! During World War II many residents chose not to evacuate due to fear that war might come home rather than pay a high price for goods they could not use or take with them when they left (the country went into recession soon afterwards). This decision helped contribute greatly towards the decline in population growth rates seen over subsequent decades outside wartime periods; however, since 2001 there has been an increase in population growth thanks largely to new housing construction which has taken place right along Route 9A northbound only two blocks east of where it crossed Interstate 90 just south of downtown!
