Some of the first coffee roasters in America were located in New York City. The first commercially sold coffee was made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte at his bakery on DeKalb Street in 1795. By 1827, two American brothers - Elijah White and John Peter Maynard - had opened a small store on Second Avenue in Manhattan that became known as the Hudson's Bay Coffee House. This early incarnation of Starbucks traces its origins to 1837 when John White purchased a third of an acre lot at what is now 16th Street and Third Avenue in Harlem from Ebenezer Cobbett. He named his new business after himself - Starbuck's Coffeehouse - and began serving ground beans from his home kitchen. The first Starbucks location was open on 125th Street between Lexington Avenue (now Union Square) and Eighth Avenue in Upper Manhattan – just east of Madison Square Garden – on November 15, 1971. The company quickly expanded into other neighborhoods across New York City before opening its first international location outside of North America at One London Place in 2002. In 2007, Starbucks announced plans to build 2 million square feet worldwide including 1 million square feet within South Korea’s Seoul Financial District; followed by similar announcements for China’s Shanghai World Financial Center (2008), Mexico City (2009), Barcelona (2010)and Tokyo Dome (2011).
