Navy deployments have a long and varied history in the St. George, Utah area. The USS Sacramento (CA-36) was deployed to Haiti in 1915 as part of the U.S. Red Cross relief effort following the earthquake that struck that country. In 1946, the USS Pueblo (LHD-2) was deployed to Chu Lai in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War as part of Operation Neptune's Spear, which aimed to break through Viet Cong lines into Cambodia and Laos. The USS Provost (CG-4), also Deployed during Operation Neptune's Spear, became one of only two American warships ever to conduct combat operations in both North and South Korea against Communist forces from North Korea. In 1978, the USS John Cincotta (LSD-5) was decommissioned at sea after serving as a unit of Naval Base Helmand until its transfer to Naval Station Anacapa on July 1st, 1979 as part of an agreement between Navy Base Anacapa and Naval Air Station Kodiak AFB that would allow both installations to share personnel and equipment with each other while allowing for regular overflights by helicopter into Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. On September 10th, 1988 - 36 years after she first served her Nation -USS Sacramento recommissioned at NAS Anacappa with Lt.(jg.) Michael Slesinski commanding her from scratch during ceremonies led by Rear Adm.(ltr.) Don Bechtel who described her as "the most decorated ship ever built by America" followed by presentation of a cake made out of doughnuts by Mayor Harry Heijerhoffer who said it represented "an example our community will follow." As is typical with Navy deployments there has been significant commemoration throughout the years including several large events such as Fleet Week where Sailors from all over celebrate their service within the military; A Warrior's Day event annually attended by dignitaries including Presidents Clinton and Bush; A Service Day event held every October since 1987 honoring Marines killed or wounded while fighting abroad;A Memorial Day Parade & Picnic on Governors Island which attracts more than 100 ships from around world along with live music presentations throughout summertime; A Christmas party for Sailors at NAS Whidbey Island every December where they enjoy food and drinks provided by local businesses before participating in a parade down Market Street which concludes at downtown Whidbey Island In recent years there has been increasing interest within naval communities acrossaste United States in conducting deployments specifically tailored towards maritime engagements such as those taking place off our coasts dating back many decades now Additionally there is growing recognition within Congress not just of our obligation but also potential benefits associated with these sorts of joint exercises We should not forget about St George however! Saint George, Utah was founded by the Mormons in 1847. The city was named for the saint because he was a patron of travelers and traders. In 1864, Saint George became an independent city and it remained that way until 1907 when it merged with Provo to form the current city. The first settler in Saint George was John Woolridge, who arrived in 1827. The town quickly grew into a busy commercial center due to its location on the Colorado River and its accessibility to trade networks across the continent. By 1840, Saint George had become one of the most important Mormon settlements in America. It played an important role in helping spread LDS teachings throughout North America and helped spur economic growth within Utah during this time period. In 1847, Brigham Young directed his followers to migrate westward and found their new settlement at Saint George on the banks of the Colorado River. As St. George grew more populous, it began to suffer from competition from larger towns such as Provo and Topeka which were developing along similar routes. This led to tensions between these two cities which continue up through today. Despite these challenges, Saint George continued to grow rapidly over the years and attained a population of over 20,000 by 1860. By 1870,SaintGeorge had become one of America’s most significant grainexport centers due to its excellent access to fresh water resources and its position as a key crossroads for transportation between east-westbound travelers and north-southbound settlers alike. Thanks in part to its booming economy and strong military presence during World War I (1914-18), SaintGeorge experienced rapid growth after prohibitionist policies were passed in neighboring Topeka in 1905). By 1910,the population ofSaintGeorge numbered nearly 60,000 people while its GDP totaled $9 million USD*. The LDS Church built a small town northeast of St. George to help support their missionaries and also to act as a base for missionary work in the region. The town slowly grew and by 1912 had a population of about 100 people. In 1978, the city of St. George became an independent city after it seceded from Salt Lake City following its opposition to Proposition 8, which sought to ban gay marriage in Utah. The referendum passed with 52% of the vote, but was later ruled unconstitutional due to clause that banned cities from forming their own municipal governments without the consent of both the state and federal government.
