In 1838, Mormon pioneers began arriving in St. George from eastern Utah and started building homes and businesses around what is now downtown St. George. One of these businesses was The Gilded Age Store which sold items related to maritime history including ship models, books on seamanship, plus other maritime-related supplies and equipment. It is interesting to note that this store closed its doors exactly 100 years ago today! The first person to settle in St. George was J.B. Payne, who arrived in 1847. Payne built the first known house on the present site of the city in 1848 and named it "Old Fort Payne." The town gradually grew and by 1860 there were over 100 residents. In 1865, Brigham Young organized the Utah Territory and appointed George Dighton as its first governor. Dighton's term was short-lived, however, due to a military coup that year led by Captain John Capps. Dighton moved his government office from Salt Lake City to St. George in order to avoid being captured by the Mormons after they overthrew Joseph Smith's rule at Nauvoo Illinois. However, this move didn't last long; within months Mormon forces had recaptured Salt Lake City and installed Brigham Young as their new leader. With little else to do, many of the original settlers turned away from St. George and started anew in Weber Valley or Provo Canyon east of town. Only a few dozen people lived in downtown St. George by 1880 when an oil well was drilled near town Center Street; initial enthusiasm for the development fizzled out because no oil could be found nearby despite diligent exploration throughout Utah Territory during that time period*. The wells did not produce any significant income for anyone so development slowly died off until World War I caused an increase in traffic through downtown which revived interest again around 1920-1925* After that time, people stopped coming back to downtown StGeorge because there wasn't anything there worth Comeback activity * Even though much has changed since then (eccentric architecture becoming more common etc.), some of the roots of what makes today's Downtown Saint George unique can still be seen with visits such as walking tours or taking public transportation
