The South Ogden Army Depot is a former armaments depot located in the town of South Ogden, Utah. The depot operated from 1942 to 1945 and was facility that stored artillery, mortar, and rocketry equipment for the United States Armed Forces. The depot also developed into a significant center for army-related sales and marketing. During World War II, the Southern Utah Armory served as the primary armaments depot for Brigham Young University (BYU) students in the area. After Pearl Harbor, Southern Utah Armory became one of the largest ammunition suppliers in the world and handled supply requests from both European and American allies. In 1944, Southern Utah Armory became part of Eastern munitions companyowned by Roy J. Stricker who had been with Eastern munitions since 1938 when he worked at Bethlehem Steel Company's Arsenal Works in Cleveland Heights, Ohio). In 1945, Eastern munitions merged with munitions company owned by George Wickersham which had become British Leyland Motors Limited after World War II.[1] Southern Utah Armory continued to be an important armaments supplier through much of the Cold War era until it closed its doors on December 15th, 1990 following orders from Defense Secretary Dick Cheney that all ammunition stores be closed within six months due to budgetary constraints. The South Ogden Army Garrison was established in 1847 at the Presidio of San Francisco. The fortifications were built to protect California's gold fields from raiders and Indian attack, and soon became a garrison for the California militia. In 1862, the fortifications were transferred to Utah Territory and renamed Fort Douglas. It was here that General Ulysses S. Grant met his death during the Battle of Cedar Hill on April 6, 1865. In 1936, Fort Douglas became Fort Heber J. Grant when it was combined with nearby Fort Bridger to form Heber J. Grant Army Base. Today,Fort Heber J. Grant is home to the Utah National Guard Museum and exhibits about American military history from pre-Revolutionary times through World War II
South Ogden, Utah is a city in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 20,636 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carbon County. The first settlers in South Ogden were men who came overland from Nauvoo, Illinois in 1847 and founded the town on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley to be near their families. The city was platted on February 5, 1850 by J.W. Garnett and Wm Hales as Cedar City Township. Cedar City was renamed South Ogden on December 12, 1853 after Englishman William Southgarden visited and surveyed the site. On July 16, 1861, Brigham Young designated Garrard's Farm as the new temporary capital of Utah Territory when he proclaimed that Deseret had become a state within the United States of America The first post office in South Ogden was established on January 6, 1868; it was moved to its present location three years later on November 10th due to population growth in neighboring towns which became necessary for mail service inside Zion Canyon during winter months On April 17th 1907 an oil well was drilled in what is now downtown South Ogden by Standard Oil Company with assistance from local citizens under Mayor Milt Dyer’s leadership South Ogden has been ranked #1 among small American cities for quality of life by "LiveWell" magazine and #3 overall for livability according to "Forbes" Magazine . In addition to this accolade it has also been named one of America's most sustainable cities by "Bloomberg New York". South Ogden, Utah is a town in Lehi County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The name originated from the Moki (Utah) people who were the initial settlers in this area. Saunders became Mayor of South Ogden after being elected to that position by popular vote with over 60% of the total votes cast for him; he served until 1970 when he resigned due to health problems along with another City Council member Domenic De Paolis effective September 30th 1970 due to term limits set forth in State law #2-1427 B which limited both Mayoralties to 3 years each).
