Roy, Utah is a small town located in Kane County, Utah. The population was 1,812 as of the 2010 census. Roy is one of the few remaining towns in Kane County that were founded by Mormons before they were forced to leave in 1914. Roy has been called "The Mormon Settlement on the Great Salt Lake" and "The Birthplace of Mormonism." The town was named after Brigham Young's father-in-law, Royce Youngblood. Mormons first arrived in what is now Kane County on June 12, 1847, during the gold rush in western Utah. They built their first church at Cottonwood Fork (near present day Roy) and started a school there. In 1851 they organized a precinct for themselves along the Jordan River and named itRoy after their father-in-law's older brother RufusRoyce Youngblood. A year later they erected a frame courthouse and set up a storeroom as their legal center. In 1862 they organized another precinct near present day North Ogden and named itMurrayfieldafter Brigham Young's younger brother David Murraywhite. The pioneers traveled frequently to preach gospel messages to settlers living east of the Great Salt Lake Valley because there was no public transportation available between Nauvoo, Illinois, and Kane County until 1863 when a wagon road was constructed from Nauvoo to Carbon Hill (now Provo). In 1868 LDS missionaries John Taylor and George Quesada founded an agricultural mission in what is now eastern Utah known as Springdale; this mission increased settlement around Springdale Prairie whereupon Church officials decided to move some 600 families from Winter Quarters (then east of Springdale) into what is now Roy on May 10th 1870 under the leadership of Orson Pratt with approval from LDS president John Taylor himself! [1] With only two exceptions – Caldwell City (northwest side), which had been part of Winter Quarters since 1830 and Millcreek Township (southwest side), which had been responsibility of Winter Quarters’s mayor – every other township withintoday’s boundaries trace back at least one iteration back to pioneer days: Millcreek Township traces its roots back to choice land given away by President James Kappley just south of Springdale Prairie; Caldwell City traces its roots back to two initial settler donations totaling 80 acres near today’s intersection of State Routes 304/320/322; White Sands Township traced its origins back even earlier than that: Pioneer Miles Hanks donated 640 acres adjacent to present day Cedar Mesa Shopping Center.] Today’s core community includes many descendants or direct descendants of early Mormons who fled polygamy or persecution following Joseph Smith Jr.'s martyrdom in 1844–45 including Elder Dallin H Oaks Sr., Orson Gary Palmer††,[2] Edwin Tacker††[3], Jeffrey Holland [*4], Spencer W Kimball††*5], Neal A Maxwell [*6], Wayne A Wright [*7]; however not all residents are affiliated with any particular religion or denomination—many residents simply identify as “Mormon” or simply say they are unaffiliated but still live within walking distance or drive options for local services offered by LDS members organizations such as The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church).[8][9]

The Trading Post Hotel served as the county courthouse from 1924 to 1928 and again from 1951 to 1957. In 1949,Roy voters passed a resolution condemning racial segregation within their community and other surrounding townships during Jim Crow America. The resolutions were met with opposition from some local residents who claimed that this stance would alienate them from future economic opportunities in Utah Valleywhile others saw it as an attempt to reviveRoy's reputation after a number of years of decline since its heyday as one of America's most important mining communities during World War II
Roy, Utah was founded in 1907 by Roy C. Christensen and his wife, Emma. The first post office in the town was opened in 1907. Roy's father, Christensen, started a general store there in 1911. In 1916, Roy married Mildred Neely and they continued to operate the store until their death in 1952. The couple had two children: Roy Jr., who operated the business until he passed away in 1984, and Linda Christensen who currently runs the business. In 1922, the Roy family donated land for a junior high school and that same year it was dedicated as Roy High School. The current building on Main Street was built in 1955 and is used today as a library.
